Hi,

I'm new to RPG Maker, having just bought MV, and I've never used any previous versions.

So far, I'm really liking it, but I would also like more assets beyond the basic stuff supplied with MV. I realise that these will become available in time, but I was wondering whether it's worth buying VX Ace, and some of the additional assets available for VX ace, for use in MV.

I'm aware the tilesets can be converted, but I've seen contradictory reports about the quality of he conversion. Do people think you can convert the Ace tilesets to MV and achieve good quality?

What about other assets for Ace, such as characters and battlers? Do they need conversion to MV in order to work, and can they be converted?

Thanks for your help!

Hi, I can't speak for everyone, but I can give you my experience. (I've worked both in RMVX, RMVXace and now in RMMV):

I don't think it's worth buying RMVX Ace just for the sprites. I am not really convinced about the conversion of RMVX Ace tiles, but soon enough some skill spriters around the forum will probably post some excellent rearranged RMVX Ace tiles in RMMV format. I as well am waiting for those, but a few good ones are already posted in the "RPG Maker MV Recourses" category. I'll suggest you have a look at those!

What about other assets for Ace, such as characters and battlers? Do they need conversion to MV in order to work, and can they be converted?
Enemy battlesprites can be used without being resizes imo, but the actor battlers are very different in RMMV. In the current game I'm making in RMMV I'm using some charactersets (Moving Arrows / birds etc) from Ace and even if they are somewhat smaller, the difference is barely noticeble (although I won't suggest using real charactersprites from Ace without resizing them properly. Besides, you can probably generate them in RMMV by yourself).

If you really want a specific character or tileset be resized to RMMV from RMVXAce, I would start a topic it in the Recourse Requests category and maybe some skilled resizer can help you out, but I defenitely recommend you not to buy RMVXAce unless you are gonna make a game/project using the software.

I hope this answers some of your questions, but remember this was just my opinion ^^!

I wouldn't buy Ace or any other earlier engine just for the assets.

You have to convert them, they won't necessarily look as good converted as they do in Ace and likely won't match the MV default assets (so you couldn't use them together), and they're not the same style as the MV assets.

I think you're better off putting your money aside until new packs are released for MV.

Unless you wanted the audio tracks - if that's where your interest is, it would certainly be worth considering.

IMO, if you've purchased VX/VX Ace tilesets which are 32x32, you can still use them in MV, however they won't fit the 48x48 sprites. So you would also need to adjust at the very least the "overworld" movement sprites so they are also 32x32. The other option is upscaling the assets, but that will always produce poor quality since it's not an even ratio. The 16x16 tiles from 2000/2003 can be scaled up x3 and be pixel perfect however.

That said. I'm not fond of square sprites. I prefer the 1:2 ratio (24x48) tall sprites like Chrono Trigger (24x36) or Sailor Moon (32x40) (at their widest and tallest, with CT 16x32 and SM being 20x40 the normal sprite size.) Both use 16x16 ground tiles from 8x8 tile segments (eg they would flip 8x8 tiles to mirror things.) So it IS possible to use smaller tiles, but you have to be mindful of how objects look (in the case of Sailor Moon, a lot of composite objects like doors are two tiles wide.)

So the more or less correct way to use previous RPGM's assets is to either adjust the sprites from MV if you want to use the smaller tiles, or adjust the tiles all manually, which is not really worth the effort. It would be just as much effort to do the tiles from scratch.

Or use the plugin to change the tile size.

Ok, well, the message from the posts above is clear and consistent: I'll wait for new assets to be released for MV, but possibly look at the audio tracks. I feel confident about game design, writing events and scripting, but unfortunately I am terrible at producing original artwork.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
