I am by no means a well known game musician, but as a musician whose music has been used in unapproved circumstances--
Even covers can be tricky depending on the copy right. I remember one time a stranger on the internet arranged a couple of my songs without asking my permission. I stumbled upon it, listened to it, and to be honest; it was awful. Pretty terrible actually. I'm rarely so blunt. The individual had arranged the music to be read with poetry and the poem was actually quite nice. But, my name was on that song. It's nice they at least gave me credit but I have to wonder, "Oh, God, what if someone thinks I wrote that song, in that way?" Someone. Out there. Is going to associate that hot mess of notes and piano head banging with me.
Should I be flattered that someone wanted to arrange my music? On some strange level the cockles of my cold heart were warmed. But at the same time a lot of the rage could have been alleviated by my permission, and given the circumstance of the arranger's, ahem, talent; if they corresponded with me and asked for my input.
I often ask to arrange music. And if given the permission, I always let the original composer listen to and OK the final product before I publish it to any sort of media (and with all the proper credits, of course).
