Hey guys

I really hope I'm asking this in the correct place, but sorry if i place it in the wrong forum.

So I have a question about using other people's scripts. What is the normal convention here about using other people's scripts in your games that you might consider selling for money? I'm asking this because I'm going to try and learn RGSS3, but I don't want to code something that someone else has already spent a lot of time on perfecting. Also would it be better for me to code my own scripts? I'm very proficient at programming, so I know I can do it, but I don't know whether it is worth the time.

Thanks for the help guys.

It depends, usually a scripter will give terms of use inside their script about use it for commercial or not, so anyone who use the script must follow the terms of use made by the script maker. And give credit to the scripter too if you use his/her script wether it's for commercial or not. If you going to learn RGSS3 in my opinion it's not that bad learning something that somebody else already do, in fact you should, because usually RGSS3 is connecting from one section to another, it's always good to gain more knowledge. But It's all of course up to you :)
Also would it be better for me to code my own scripts? Again it depends, if you want to improve your knowledge in RGSS3 then you should try to make your own scripts, even though you use other peoples script, it's not hurt to try make your own :) . For me it's worth the time, because I myself, aiming to create a game using my own scripts, so I won't be bothered with script permission issue if someday I'll released my game for commercial :) .
So in my opinion, if you have time learn it all, it's worth your time, but again you're the boss :) Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. You've given me some valuable information and advice. I'm going to mark this as solved, but can I keep the thread open for other people's opinions?

You're welcome, I'm glad I can be some help. Yes, until you think you've got enough opinion from the others, I think you can keep the thread opened :)
Just one thing that bothered me, it looks like you've made this post in wrong place(hope I'm wrong) But that's okay, mods here is nice, they'll not bite unless you bite them first :p

Yeah, I've seen them work quite quickly and efficiently. Best mods I've seen in my life so far.

Up to you really. In the end, you are going to be spending either time or money for the same thing.

If you choose to use someone else's script, you need to figure out how to get it to work with your project. You might need to tweak it as well if there are compatibility issues, or get someone else to tweak it for you. This usually requires money.

If you choose to write your own, you need to actually write it yourself. This may involve learning the existing code base and then figuring out how to add your own stuff. This usually requires time.

If you feel that you could write a decent script in 30 minutes to accomplish what you need rather than pay someone $50 to license a script that does just that, then you might figure it would be more cost-effective to just write it yourself (if spending 30 mins is worth the $50)

On the other hand, if you expect to be putting over 200 hours to write a system that's already been done, and figure $100 is worth your time, you might go with licensing the script.

Also a good suggestion. I'll be making my own scripts then as I don't have money to commit to the development of a game yet.

If I had to choose between working 200 hours on a script, or spending $100 to get it, I'd probably pick up any random jobs which will probably earn more than $100 in 200 hours.

May be an option.

My course is a huge money sink at the moment, still two years to go before I can even start thinking about putting money away for game resources.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
