Hello there!

I usually don't post much on forums (also, I'm quite a stranger here since this is my very first post on the RPGMaker Forums!) and this thread is pretty old already... But I really wanted to step by and say THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH! for this tutorial. You really made it possible for me to have some light effects in my game without using scripts (because, really, I love the event-feature on the rpg maker and I admit the first [and last so far] try to add a script to my game failed. Also, I really don't like the idea some scripts require something like an 'engine' script 'n stuff.)

Thank you. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge with us!

Cheers.

Awesome, thanks for this tutorial :) It's very easy to do, the intro is more interesting with the lights in my opinion :)

Here are some photos of what I've done with the lights: (note, the dialog is in spanish :D , dont need to understand spanish to understand the picture though lol xD)

You can also make it change from "add" to "sub" in loop to give it a blinking effect. It can be useful in a futuristic setting for exemple to make lights flicker.

@M_Michael -  Defenitly adds a little magic to the intro ;) Maybe just try to take some opacity from the light to make it glow a little bit less?

@Nice Earl - Seems like a good idea, it can give a pretty good effect. Either that or change from transparent on to off.

It's all ok, it makes the character shine lol :)  (I prefer shine over character visibility as it looks nice and shine and they will appear in the game anyway :D ) and thanks :D

Superb!!! Excellent tutorial!!

One question... the "light" event is below the fire.. why does it still display the radius as if it were on top of the fire?

It's due to the size of the graphic. RPG Maker places the graphics from their bottom -> upwards, so that the feet of the chars allways stay on the chosen tile. Since the graphic tile is pretty big, the light seems to go 1 tile up.

Hi I'm trying to use a lighting effect on an orb in one of my games that will direct my player where to go, could you tell me how to adapt this accordingly?

Hm, I guess the best option you have there is to merge the orb's graphic with the light effect one, and treat that event as the orb itself.

I'm here to teach you a very very easy way of doing lighting effects without using any kind of script or complicated stuff.

This tutorial is Beginner Friendly.

After this tutorial you'll have something like this:

So Let's Start!

#1 - Set up your map and place an event of a fireplace (Stepping Anim & Direction Fix checked).

#2 - Just in the tile below create another event with the following characteristics:

           - Stepping Anim, Direction Fix & Through checked.

           - Priority: Above Characters

           - Speed: 4x Faster

           - Frequence: Highest

           - Movement Type: Custom

                  - Click the button "Move Route..." and place the following commands in order:

                          - Change Blending: Add

                          - Uncheck "Repeat Action"

           - Add this image as the graphic:

Name the file "!$Light 1" if it's not by default.

You should have something like this (I forgot to put direction fix there. Also, you should use the Through checkbox instead of putting it in the movement command):

#4 - (Optional) Create another event anywhere. Make it a Parallel process. Insert the Event Command "Tint Screen" and click in the button "Night" or just make a dark tint. Set the Time to 1 frame and click OK.

Insert the Event Command "Erase Event".

#5 - Copy and paste to have multiple lights.

Test it and experiment new things!

Hope you enjoyed the Tutorial :)

Share some screenshots with this technique if you want!

I discovered a glitch, when you use this as a street light the event will follow you down the screen its weird

You must have used a picture (or a custom event system that pastes event position to the screen), because only pictures follow the screen...

I can see I wasn't the first to have this idea :p

Thanks for the additions :)

@Nathan

I'm not sure I understand your question, but have you tried the 'Tint Screen' command on the second tab of the Event Command Menu?

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
