Very Enthusiastic Newbie

Hi everyone!


My name's Danielle, but I go by deadtuning on most sites. I recently lost my job in accountancy due to health reasons and decided a change of career was worth looking at. I've always been interested in video games, and always wanted to get into how they're made etc. Combined with a dad who is basically a major geek and did programming at college it was natural to look into programming and coding (to which his reaction was "FINALLY! it suits you so well"). I found RPG Maker and I'm currently playing with VX Ace Lite and the trial of MV until I can afford the full program. I literally know NOTHING (calm your Game of Thrones references, I've only seen season 1) but I am so excited and enthusiastic and learning quickly. I'm also doing an online course in basic coding principles which combined with RPG Maker as a practical outlet is helping me to learn and understand basic concepts very quickly. I'm hoping once my health problems are under control I can go to college, hopefully university, and get a degree in Computer Science or similar, but right now that's a very loose dream.  


I'm currently in the process of writing my own game (a horror visual novel type RPG, puzzles and all that but no real battle system - the game focuses on rather serious issues of mental health and is both an outlet for my own problems and will hopefully serve as an outlet for others, as well as spread awareness of mental health problems) but as this is super ambitious at this stage I'm also trying other small projects just to play around with different things and understand the program better.


I also want to try as many different games as possible! I love seeing what is possible with the engine. It absolutely blows my mind to imagine that maybe one day I could create something like that. I'm hoping to do Let's Plays for youtube to help promote and support these games. Please feel free to recommend any games to me you incredible people have made!


I feel like I'm kind of rambling but I also haven't really said much about me that isn't directly related to RPG Maker soooo a bit about me,


I'm 23, female, live in Scotland, unemployed due to poor health but working to resolve that in a positive manner (happy to discuss privately with people but it's not something to bog you guys down with publicly). I live on my own with a lot of stuffed toys. I have a possibly unhealthy obsession with red pandas (are there any red panda resources available? I've been encouraged in the past to write children's stories featuring a red panda, but considering trying to make an educational child friendly RPG instead). I'm a gamer obviously  Big fan of horror, and more recently visual novel style games are interesting me. Long time fan of RPGs like Final Fantasy but generally I play anything and everything. Currently playing Farcry 3 and Fantasy Life. Avid reader and writer, and I imagine with time my focus will be on programming and coding games. The visual side is not something I'm good at... I play guitar and bass but I'm no composer. And I live on Pepsi Max and dark chocolate.


Wow, I got a bit carried away haha. Feel free to ask me anything, and you'll probably see me being a complete idiot a lot asking how things work and gushing over your tutorials and resources. Everything I've seen on this forum is SO AMAZING that I was actually nervous to make this post haha. Please be kind.

Thank you, Andar! I don't think I'm even halfway through reading that post and it's pointed out a lot of things for me to think about and consider. I've already made the "dream game" error by trying to start working straight on my dream game (the horror visual novel-esque one I mentioned in my post) but that one has been shifted to strictly pen and paper while I plan it out, and working on other projects and tutorials to understand the program a lot more before I actually attempt it again. Really informative post, thank you!

Your story reminds me a lot of mine. I had to quit at one of the best content and advertising agencies in my country due to a problem in my lumbar spine. That sucks. Now, I've become a freelancer designer and I'm trying to keep the positivity! Haha!
