Hey all.

i am planning to develop a simple game, visual novel like, but yet the RPG part. I have some ideas, but I wonder if someone has worked on a similar concept and knows some tutorials, or event patterns, just to help me save some time.

Thanks to all.

Well, I think Visual Novels with combats or actual gameplay outside all the reading and all the scenes can't REALLY be called a Visual Novel anymore, even if 90% of it or whatsoever is actually just scenes and reading.

From what I've seen, Visual Novels area really just reading and watching and things like that, so, yeah, I think your concept idea wouldn't exist for a Visual Novel, but for another game genre.

Isn't a visual novel with combat what an RPG is supposed to be?

If we call Visual Novels a genre then that genre can be bent like any other can. At this point it's impossible keep track of all the games with "rpg elements" so why cant the same be done for Visual Novels. Games like Zero Escape or Phoenix Wright or Professor Layton always felt like visual novels to me, but they're probably more along the lines of puzzle games. I don't see why you can't replace puzzles with action and make an RPG-visual novel. I'm sure others are out there, but the first thing that comes to mind is the Devil Survivor series. There's a lot of dialogue and choices, but it's also an RPG.

As for advice, just get your Variable/Switches down and you could do this pretty easily. Of course scripts (and/or plugins) will also help.

The Ar Tonelico games, although an RPG is considered a Visual Novel first. Heck the whole Cosmosphere part is pure visual novel. I do agree with hiromu656 with the Devil Survivor series, but I'd say Persona 3 and 4 are have more VN properties. It also depends on your setting. Visual Novels are so flexible and easy to mix with other genres it can lose it's identity at point. VNs, games or graphic novel is the usual argument... But yeah, if you're looking for references with VNs with RPG qualities I'd say to start with the Ar Tonelico games~ :3

P.S: You will cry. At least once. The feeeeeeels.

For a reference look at Loren the Amazon Princess. It has a lot of rpg qualities therefore making it a rpg but it retains a lot of the feel of visual novels by how it presents it scenes and gives the player choice in the story and direction of romances.

Hello guys and gals, thanks for the feedback.

I am not saying this is new, and yes I was pointing to Loren Amazon Princess or similar games. More point onto art and conversation, but with also exploration, and combats.

Has anyone worked on that? Like changing into choice/event system to normal RPG Maker screen? Thanks a lot.

Of course. But for example, more art and dialogue than moving the character on the map. It's the same genre of course, but a different game mechanic

The Hyperdimension Neptunia series is like this. Dialogue is completely visual-style based, but you get to explore dungeons/field areas and have combat. Mk2 and Victory are better than the first one. ^^

What i really need is some rpg maker user experience, do you have any experience in that kind of games? Thanks a lot

I'm sorry, I've only thought about it since I'm okay at art. Suck at coloring and backgrounds, so never made it very far. ^^;;

Good luck!

By VN style, do you mean only using some pictures, standing picture of characters, and lotsa text? Or utilizing RPG Maker's eventing system by moving around the maps to activate events and such?

The latter is much more common in RPGM games, while the first one is a rare one. Either way, both style are the same except the utilization of maps.

Hello Einreicht, thanks for participating. Indeed i was referring to the second issue, the event part.

My plan is a Daily routine like, for example, Princess Maker or Long Live the Queen (Hanako Games). But, in my user experience, in this games I miss the exploring dungeon and combat. So the point is combining this Daily life with the option of going into the map.

I am working on the events, will share it with you when works. But I was requesting if someone had experience with that or some event pattern to share :)

Princess Maker is more like a simulation game rather than a visual novel, and Long Live the Queen is a simpler version of it.

If you're planning to make such a game, you'll need some additional scripts in order to accomodate the extra statuses. Its still doable without the extra scripts, but will require more events and planning.

Yes I checked some scripts for the extra statuses, thanks. And thanks for the correction, yes its more a simulation game indeed. My major problem now is jumping between the Daily choices to the map.

I'm fairly certain, as someone who has played VNs to an absurd level, that VNs cover a broad range. While in America, the term has been narrowed down a bit, if you look at what VNs cover in Japan, as an example, you'll notice a lot of VNs have plenty of minigames and other elements. A game could be a VN while being many other genres as well.

As for jumping between major choices, you could have events (if you don't use scripts) that are then called by other actions.

One way that I've used is a single teleport event with variable based teleportation and then various events use the teleport event with their own variables.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
