Wayfarer

Genre: RPG
Flavor: Old School
Language: English
Engine: RPG Maker VXACE

Brief Introduction
Hello RPGMakerWeb forums, I’m link491 and today I am proud to present my first true RPG Maker game; Wayfarer. Wayfarer is essentially my love letter to everything that made the JRPGs of the NES days great. From the rather generic and almost nonexistant plot to a world that forces you to explore and talk to people as opposed to following a path to complete your quest, I’ve tried to bring this game as close to games such as the first Dragon Warrior of the original Final Fantasy as I possibly could.

Plot
After many years of peace the Demon King returned to bring strife to the world once more.

Many would-be heroes attempted to slay the Demon King, yet all of them failed.

After many months, the descendant from the line that protected the Holy Sword emerged - The Chosen One! He entered the Demon Kings' Isle to vanquish the evil as legend dictated that he would...

Current Features

  • Leveling Magic System
Spells level up as you use them, gaining extra effects based on how high you've leveled them to

  • Scaling Enemy Levels
The games' difficulty dedicates itself to being "NES Hard". Enemies level up with the character and most of them will at the very least deal damage by the end of the game, regardless of level.

  • Open world with 5 towns as well as 2 dungeons containing a boss each.
Things I'd Like to Add or Change

  • More world Lore and History
Currently in three of the towns, you can talk to any number of NPCs that will talk about the history of the town and the world around it. I plan to add a lot more of this as time goes by.
  • Side Quests
As mentioned before there are two main dungeons and respective bosses. I'd like to create a few more dungeons as well as other types of quests for the player to do so things don't feel so on-rails.
  • Custom Assets
Currently, the graphics that this game uses consist of those found in the RPG Maker DS/DS+ Resource Packs, as well as a bit of things from the RTP and a couple of edits. I am working on my own original tiles to use instead but I am not much of an artist, so they are taking a long time to make look nice.

Feedback

If you downloaded this game, or maybe you have some sort of constructive criticism, or anything really, please don't hesitate to leave a comment! While the base games' quest is complete, I'm somebody that feels that there is always room to improve and would love to hear how I can do so :)

Known Bugs/Missing Things

  • Currently no known bugs
  • There is no form of end text after beating the final boss. The game just goes to credits. This will be changed in a future update.

Leveling Enemies Script: Yanfly

Changelog

October 27, 2015: Made some of the later game enemies harder. Demon King actually puts up a fight now. Got rid of On-Death Common Events as there is now a fast travel spell. Uploaded curent version for release.

October 22, 2015: Finished reworking the dungeons. They now actually look like dungeons

October 21, 2015:Removed Guard and Flee commands and replaced them with a Dodge command. This command will guarantee a dodge of a physical attack, as well as heal you a small bit and give you a small chance to counter the hit. Refined story and text a bit, added more history  to the world. Populated the towns some more. Greatly improved the world maps' mountain formations. They now use the large mountain tile from the RTP and feel far bigger for it.

October 13, 2015: Completely re-drew underground path to be more
cave-like, while keeping the same shape and design. Quan'Ma is
no longer a town of monsters but the ruins of a town that once
housed them (no point in having it if I have no plans to do anything
with it). Began re-writing all text to give the main character some form of personality, as well as proper interactions with the world. Text is no longer instant.

October 6, 2015: Took down link to fix bugs. Fixed a bunch of bugs. Began incorporating plans to make the story a bit more involved.

October 5, 2015: Incorporated the Yanfly Engine Ace - Enemy Levels v1.02 Script into the game, the game difficulty now scales with the player so there should be no point of the game that feels too easy. You will still be able to go to the early areas and murder enemies once you've got some good gear.

October 2, 2015: Slightly adjusted the stats of early monsters so they dont hit as hard and go down easier, added bigger encounters! You can now fight multiples of enemies as well as more theme based encounters. There is now 3 types of potions, and they heal status aliments as well as health and mana. Fixed wierd bug where battlebacks wouldn't show up on bridges. 3 Trinkets added, they give a choice of more counter rate, more evasion or a bit of health regen.

September 30, 2015: Rebalanced early monsters and player so that the game actually has some semblance of difficulty.

September 28, 2015: Made Gostys less impossible to kill.

September 23, 2015: Completed base game, compiled Changelog and Credits File.

(When you compress a game, click the 'Create Encrypted File' box)

BUGS:

Entrance to the Demon Castle is blocked by an event. You're set on the wrong side of it and can't get in.

Missing music on Demon's Castle F3, crashes the game.

Both of these make the game so you can't finish it. I was able to fix them, since you didn't create an encrypted file.

My Review:

Plot: 1 out of 5 stars.  :|   it doesn't get much more cliche than this...there was even a dragon thrown in that I have to kill. I half expected to find a princess to marry after rescuing her from the demon's castle...

Game-play: 2 out of 5 stars.  :|  Stale. All the towns are basically the same. I'm running around with barely any plot, and no idea as to what I'm doing or why...

There's no sense of urgency. I'm given no explanation as to why I have this broken sword. I just...trespass onto the demon king' property and murder him. The spells were fiiiine, but I only got fire & heal, with no reason to buy any other spells AT ALL (didn't even really need fire, see below)

Balance: 3 out of 5 stars. >_>   Early game would be fine. However, since you can save at any time, and run from battles, you can literally run to the higher level zones and grab all the high end equipment (which ALL the best stuff is found in a single cave), then walk back and start killing everything without any issues.

Ending: 1 out of 5 stars.  >:( No dialogue between the main character and the FINAL BOSS. I just walk up to him and start fighting. Killed him in 3 hits. No ending scene after killing him! Disappointing.

Disappointing is the word that I would currently use for this game. Especially since you've posted it in the "Completed Games" section. I've spent an hour & 10 minutes completing this. 99% of that time, I was fighting, or walking.

My suggestions!

Add more explanations.

Add side-quests, but NOT ones like "Go kill 10 X's for me"

Don't just allow the player to find all the best equipment all at once. Add equipment/items as rewards (for side-quests!)

Provide more information about where to go.

Delve into the relationship between humans and "Monsters" but not just as a backstory narration scene. Since you have a town of monsters, try to show how they're not always bad.

Playtest your game for bugs!

I'm sorry if I sound harsh at all, but you need to know why games like yours don't get green-lit. (The steam community is rough, true. However, they've been impressed by RPG Maker games before, but you have to make them STAND OUT!)

Hey thanks so much for the detailed comment! I wasn't actually aware that not encrypting the file would enable others to edit it, kinda silly in hindsight but still good that I know now. Looking at my game from your perspective, I feel like your problems with the game are all quite prevalent, and I have quite a bit of work to do before I can really consider this a complete game. I've sent a PM to Archeia requesting this be moved to the Project Development thread.

Once again thanks so much for the harsh yet fair words :)

Edit: Fixed immediate problems mainly bugs and improved balancing by incorporating Yanfly's Enemy Level Script. This update won't fix stuff like a lack of story or any of that, but we're getting there.

Edit 2: Uploaded bugfixed version, removed the quote from this post because it was massive :p

He mad, but he cute :kaopride:

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
