Just wondering what people like to do with NPCs to make them interesting when they're just standing around.
I've played games where they just stand there still until you talk to them. This is also how I do it most of the time. It is a bit boring to me.
Other ways I can think of are giving them patrol movement routes. This is pretty nice, but I find in RPG Maker MV its a bit sloppy when you try to talk to an NPC and they're in between moving from one tile to the next. Like, they'll turn to face you while moving and start talking.
Other things I can think of are custom animations like blinking, moving head around, etc. This is doable, but time consuming to make, especially if there's a lot of NPCs. A way to simplify this is to not have animations, but just have the characters turn and face different directions at random.
Final way I can think of is to have the NPCs do their stepping animation on the spot, which I've seen in plenty of games. Do you think this is a good way? It doesn't make sense for characters to be stepping on the spot like that, but it provides a lot of movement, makes NPCs stand out, and a lot of games have done it so it seems pretty accepted.
An example of stepping on the spot I just saw in this game on steam that was posted today here. You can see it in their trailer.
I was also just looking at Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. That's a more modern JRPG and that has walking in place NPCs too.
