So I recently got RPG Maker VX Ace, and I'm still wrapping my head around everything with it. So please pardon me if I'm not using the correct terms.
Now, what I'm planning to do is when a battler/actor equips something like an Iron Sword, he would have an Iron Sword graphic in his hands in combat. And when I equip him with a Gold Sword, he would have a Gold Sword graphic in his hands. There's 2 ways that I could think off that achieves this.
1. Create 2 (Iron and Gold Sword) set of imgs/animations. And when said actor has Iron Sword equiped, the script will call for the Iron Sword images. And same goes for Gold Sword.
2. Have some sort of graphical layers (ala Photoshop) that changes the weapon graphic and plays in sync with the battler.

The first choice is simple, but requires a lot of work. Which is something I'm not going to do considering the complexity of the combat system I've planned. And the problem (or lack thereof) with the second choice is that I have no idea if it's possible. Which is why I'm asking, and hopefully will have an answer. Thanks in advance.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
