Hi,

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but im pretty new to everything regarding programming and im not quite sure, i got the porpuse of Regions... What are they for, what are (example) mechanics with them? (ive seen a tutorial about Doodads, where he was talking about regions and the use of them seemed to be pretty "casual", so i was wondering what i have to know about those...)

thanks for your help =)

Regions are used to do certain tricks with the environment, an example being,

Walking on water or over a huge gap as if there's an invisible path.

EDIT: This is from what I've learned about them, they're kinda new for me as well, but best way to gain knowledge is to ask question when needed. :p

Regions are used to change how certain areas of you map behave. I can quickly think of a couple of examples, though most of them require plugins.

  • Block events from stepping onto certain tiles on your map (with Yanfly's Region Restrictions plugin)
  • Split a map into different battle encounter zones, such as two sides of a river having different enemies (doesn't require any plugins)
  • Trigger a common event when player steps onto the tile with a certain region (with Yanfly's Region Events plugin)

There are probably plenty of other uses as well, but hopefully these few help you get an idea of what you can do with regions.

Regions can be used for a number of things. Most commonly, they are used to assign certain troops for Random Encounters to specific areas of a map - e.g. if a forest area on the world map is painted with Region 1, a desert with Region 2, then different troops can be assigned to the different Regions in the Map Properties.

You can also check in a Conditional Branch if the player is standing on a certain Region. This way, you can create complex puzzles with very few events.

Third, there is a plugin for RMMV called Yanfly's Region Restrictions that allows you to specify some Regions as passable/impassable for the player or events. In that case, the Region passability overrides the passability setting of the tileset. This plugin is often used for advanced mapping techniques like Doodads or Parallax mapping, and the use of Regions for passability is probably what you saw in the Doodads tutorial.

To get really down to the basics, regions are nothing but markers that you can place at maps.

And then there are several ways to check a tile for that marker, to activate or trigger some specific function.

By default you can either check the region of a position by event command - for example have a shovel item call a common event, in the common event check if the current player position has a special region and if yes, show text that the player found something digging.

The other default function is in the map properties, where to find which random enemy troop

and in addition to that, a lot of plugins add more functions based on region ID markers

Thanks a lot :)

Guess there is quite a lot to study... :'D i thought there might be a way to use the regions for "in-depth"Maps....(example: bridge... going beneath and on based on your groundlevel)

that is one of the functions that region codes might be used for - if you have the correct plugin for that.

There was a script for Ace that did this, but it hasn't been converted for MV (and I believe it won't be)
