All hobbies make you smarter, even if it's just smarter about that hobby. ^_^

re Chess: that reminds of of this really cool book I read, it was actually about artificial intelligence, but it had some neat info about chess.
According to this book: back a long time ago, chess was like, the gold standard for determining intelligence. Everybody who was anybody in the intelligentsia agreed that being good at chess was the ultimate expression of human intellect.

And then they invented computers that could play chess.

It became apparent that computers were unequivocally better at chess than humans; because the key factor to being good at chess turns out to be the ability to extrapolate every potential move.
In other words, not intelligence. Just memory and statistics.
(Which doesn't mean that chess players aren't smart. Just that being good at chess isn't the essential quality that defines intelligence.)

Anything where you solve something you had no knowledge about is something you can use to train your brain. If you play chess all the time, especially against same opponents, you only get good at that. It's like food, if you keep eating the same thing all over again, well I feel same happens with brains if you consume too much chess (even if its a great game)

My new hobby - collecting postal stamps. I've already had 30 stamps in my collection. Besides I check postal code through site to avoid mistakes and I memorize almost all postal codes from my collection. It turned out to be very entertaining.
