Not good at it? I think you're doing a pretty fricking good job of it.
Two things though.
First: Pay attention to the layering of the trees. There are a few trees that should be behind others but are in front. Just look at how high up the image the trunk of the tree is. The closer to the top, the further behind it should be.
Second: Don't just use the green grass under the trees and then the light path in the open areas. The path on this map is extremely obvious, so it doesn't
need to be highlighted with a ground tile. Splash some of that dark green around, and add some deep grass to the walkable area as well.
Oh, and uh, third I guess: you could do with tightening up your paths. Unless your sprites are big (which they shouldn't be because they'd be giants to your trees) or the game uses an ABS, the paths shouldn't be so wide. The trees are so dense, but then not dense in the walkable areas? Yeah, they'd be a little more sparse because those paths were presumably cleared, but they shouldn't be so far apart.
