But, as a counterpoint, I really don't like it when you have a legitimate question about a complicated process, and basically get a "figure it out" response. I've dealt with scriptors who give no actual instructions on using their scripts, and artists who refuse to share techniques.

I can understand the whole "teach a man to fish" thing, but when their advice is "Go to where there's fish, and catch one", not only is it entirely unhelpful, it's kind of a jackass move. Just be honest and say, "I have no interest whatsoever in helping people."

I've heard quite a few times. Why is it that in Germany people don't really smile?
It's a cultural thing. I dunno. It's not meant to be rude. Keeping your distance to strangers is considered to be polite. We don't want to delve into their life story, nor do they want us to.

We like to keep to our closest friends and family. In these circles, Germans do laugh and smile a lot.

Ugh. That's another thing:

"How are you?"

Unless asked by a loved one or a doctor, NOBODY ACTUALLY CARES. If you ask me how I am, especially as a stranger, what you're asking me to do is lie and say, "fine, thanks", and then do the same to you. You don't actually want me to tell you I don't like my job or half the people I work with, or that I'm worried about a family member, or that I might have to have surgery, or any of the other problems occupying my mind. And if I answered honestly and told you How I Am, you'd either freak out or feel obligated to offer false sympathy.

Exactly. You have better words to put this than I do, thank you.

That doesn't mean that German try to avoid interacting with strangers. There are often people who will help you with carrying heavy bags (at the station) or let you move forward in a queue. But these acts usually only result in a quick smile and "thank you", then both parties pretend to not see each other.

Back again! Lol

The amount of adults, or even people above the age of 10 that don't know the difference between your/you're, then/than, there/their/they're, our/are, every day/everyday etc...

And then there's "nevermind". Nevermind is only acceptable if you're referring to the Nirvana album! D'oh!

English was easily my weakest subject at school, but I just don't understand how so many primary English speakers can mess it up.

I cannot think of anything that seems to bother me consistently... I do not get bothered too easily  :p

Wait

....But there is one thing.

When a man whines more than I did when I was 5 years old  :guffaw:

Is example just about two months ago I was out to eat with a guy and he said his food was too salty..

Tooo salty?????? and he complained enough to get his money back. I didn't call him back  >_>

Oh my, that makes me cringe....

Well, there is such a thing as way too salty. I've been to places where the food almost crunched with a layer of salt. If, however, he ate it anyway, it couldn't have been too bad.

This is only a small part of a neverending list:

  1. People that talk while their mouth is full or that they talk a lot while eating. That's totally unpolite and gross.
  2. People that smoke near me (in a small room) without asking me the permission. I don't want to breathe your poison so go away.
  3. Nail biters...urgggghhhh. No comment here.
  4. People that make jokes about my height. Like seriously is it that rare to see a 6'3 guy nowdays? I don't think so.
  5. People that play with their mobile phones while you talk to them, and barely pay attention to what you say. This annoys me a LOT.
  6. People that enter in the doctor's office after you and yet they ask to enter before you (while you're waiting there hours for your turn).
  7. People that spit on the ground... -_-
  8. People that cough or sneeze without covering their mouth. *facepalms*
  9. People that use mobile phones in the churches or while they drive. The second one screams total irresponsibility.
  10. People that make their dogs doing "their things" where they shouldn't.
  11. These lovely people who put their mobile phone ringing at full volume, and when they get a call they make sure that everyone would be able to hear their "awesome new ringtone" fully before responding to it.

Oh, I have another one.

  • Being told to "smile more" or "what are you so sad about?" I'm not. When I talk, I smile. When I make eye contact, I smile. If I'm thinking about something, I make facial expressions. But when I'm zoned out and staring at a wall, yes I look like I want to stab you. I'm not angry. That's just my face.
Oh man how I can relate to this, I blame my eyebrows for it but my resting face looks pretty angry to people who don't know me apparently.  It makes me pretty uneasy and then I just end up looking like I'm grimacing when really I'm just mildly worried :p  I must also have the "angriest" smile ever haha.

Some pet peeves of mine:

  • Sudden loud changes in volume, like it's really quiet and then some shouts or a dog barks, I'm gonna jump.
  • Fake people, as in people who pretend to be happy but aren't.  To compensate for my inability to hear I've subconsciously learned how to read peoples moods by body language etc.  If you're only pretending to be happy about something, I'll often pick up on it.
  • People who don't initiate conversations and then complain when I don't, I'm an introvert so I only tend to initiate conversations with people I'm comfortable with/like a lot and even then, I won't do it everyday.
  • Following on from that, people who complain about my introverted tendencies.  A lot of people refuse to understand that I do not like parties/social gatherings unless I know everyone there well, I have to really push myself in these situations and I will always need some downtime afterwards.  I wish people would be more considerate of that.
  • When people make excuses about things: if you made a mistake you should own up to it.  Being wrong isn't as bad as you think it is, we're all wrong about things all the time and it's better to be positive about changing what you have the power to than to make excuses and then never improve yourself.

Yeah, I could list most of Dalph's and Scythuz's lists for myself.

One other silly thing is also one of my bad habits: people leaving cabinets and drawers open. It drives me crazy, but half the time, I realize that I'm the one that left them open. :p

One of my biggest red buttons is willfull ignorance and apathy. I've heard so many people say such-and-such disability isn't real or such-and-such group of people don't deserve certain rights given to everyone else. It sickens me.

I am also horribly and irrationally entomophobic.

People who are proud of their vices.

People who don't value the things (or people) they rely on.

People who refuse to try.

Being judged unfairly.  Uuugh, all the people who think I'm fine just because I don't look sick need to stop.  Yes, I see your "ugh, what a drain on society" look.  Just say something already!  Then I can tell you how much of a jerk you're being.  And enough with the "you just need to try harder and you'll be healthy" garbage when you actually do talk.  It's like people think it's fun to live like this.

This thread is pretty toxic so I'll add something to the other side.  The things that people do to make it easy for me to forgive or ignore annoying things.

Apologizing.  Not just "I'm sorry" but actually wishing the event hadn't happened and trying to make it right.  If I see some real effort I don't care that it happened anymore.

Kindness.

Effort.

People who don't know how to open the bags in cereal boxes correctly.

(Admittedly this is super silly, but ever time I open one and its either opened all the way across, or opened like, on one side but not all the way to the edge, it just makes me cry inside).

Not going to lie, I'm the absolute worst at opening and closing everything. Even I annoy myself in that regard.

Ah ok, when you put it that way that makes a lot of sense.  :)

I'm taking a class for business writing and management and those are some of the most common grammar errors that we've discussed in class lol

I am one of those people  >_> , lol whenever I open up a box or bag of cereal there is sure to be a mess and sorrow...

"How are you?"

This is a pet peeve of mine too, mostly because I don't actually know how to properly answer it. "Fine" and "Doing good" are lies, and I don't lie. Saying "Surviving" or "Relatively good" or going over how I'm actually doing is depressing for both sides of the conversation, you don't care and I don't want to focus on stuff like that.  I've settled on "I'm alright" which works for most people, except my sister-in-law who actually does want to know how I'm doing and responds with "Just alright?"  That's okay though, 'cause she actually wants to know and I like talking to her.

My understanding is that this phrase is a hold over from a time when the question was always asked seriously, disease was much more common, death rates were higher, and you never really knew if someone was going to be around the next day.  I think it's outlived it's purpose.

I can name the most infuriating pet peeve of mine with two words:

"GOOGLE IT"

If I could find the answer easily with google, why would I bother to make a post asking about it (and taking a lot of time to make said post)?

If you refer to a news article about something and respond with "GOOGLE IT" when questioned where is the source of this article, I will not bother to look it up (I will also think it is highly likely the story was made up too).

If I hear a post say those two words, my response is simple, to conclude that you know less of the subject then me (since I would have already tried to look it up before asking) and are not worth talking to about it.

My default response to "How are you?" is "Still breathing." Not lying, and it's just as pointless to say as the question itself its. Perfect match. Although I will occasionally give a more detailed response to the people that say it with the big fake grin on their faces, just to watch them figure out how to handle it.

One of my biggest pet peeves would be people who don't clean up after themselves. Especially in an area that's meant to be a shared space.
