Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Sam and Max, Indiana Jones (Lucas Arts made great adventure games, okay?), Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Zelda, Kirby Super Star, Commander Keen. . . . If you open the list up to the games I didn't enjoy playing myself but loved watching my brothers play the list gets a little ridiculously big. I owned very few of those games but was lucky enough to know people who did who'd let me borrow them.

Edit: Oh, and Myst! That one was a favorite too! I definitely have favorite genres.
Shram where have you been all my life? O_O jk, jk, but this exactly how my list would go! I would just add games like Final Fantasy 9, Metal Gear Solid series and Crash Bandicoot, and to boost the adventure game list let's add Broken Sword and The Longest Journey. :)

The Sonic and Knuckles collection on the PC is what not only got me into the Sonic franchise as a kid, but into video games in general. I can't remember specifically why I liked playing it, but I think I just liked the character, appealing to me both in that he was my favorite color, blue, and had the attitude that I envied as a child (and still kind of do when I see it in other people).

Outside of the PC, I also had a few games for the Gameboy. I was never allowed to own a console game until I was 10 years old, so the gameboy and the PC were my only real sources. I got two copies of Kirby's Dreamland christmas, and I would challenge my sister to races on who could beat the game the fastest. Fun times.

I should also mention The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (the original release, not the DX version), because that was a game that I recieved sometime when I was five or four years of age, but I could NEVER get past the beginning until five or so years later. I think my logic/reasoning skills weren't as developed back then, because I didn't even understand how you were supposed to get to the first dungeon, and what you were supposed to do with that magic powder the witch gave you. So yeah, that was one of those games that I could never complete until I got older. Nowadays, I can beat it with my eyes closed. :p

I noticed some people here also talked about those PC adventure games, what about some of the educational/activity center games? By far my favorite was The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis. Even as I look back on it today, it was fantastic in that it didn't shove the whole "I'M AN EDUCATIONAL GAME LETS USE THE POWER OF MATH" down your throat, but instead treated itself as its own unique adventure which encouraged you to figure things out on your own, and it gets legitimately challenging as the game goes on. I wish I could find the disk to is so I can play it again, for the sake of nostalgia.

I have played many enjoyable games throughout my life. But my all time favourite games consist of. ~

Chuck Rock (The first videogame I ever played and has a special place in my heart).

Toejam & Earl 1 & 2 (Strangely enough, I played the 2nd before the 1st. The graphics on that game wowed me back i the day).

Age of Empires (The game that got me into strategy).

And my all time favourite game to date, Final Fantasy IX (This game redefined videogames for me).

I forgot one, Pandora's Box on the PC. A puzzle game that has nothing to do with Professor Layton.

Crash Bandicoot was so much fun back in the day. I never owned a Playstation but my friend did and I remember playing Crash Bandicoot and Twisted Metal for the first time when I was like 9 years old.

I got to play Crash VERY late... as in last February, thanks to PSN.

I may be missing out because I didn't start when I was a kid, but it's still holds up well in a strange way.

The older games with outdated graphics are just as fun as newer games with high resolution graphics because of high quality game mechanics in my opinion. A few good examples : Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, The Legend of Zelda : A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia, Megaman, Final Fantasy 3, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania, Kid Icarus, The Guardian Legend, Age of Empires, Warcraft 1 & 2, Diablo 1 & 2, Starcraft, ect...

It's Arkanoïd: with my childhood friend, we spent countless hours of our summer vacation of the moment trying to unlock all stages and bonuses –I believe we could reach level 33 or something...

I have not heard of Chip's Challenge or Gianna Sisters. Never got an opportunity to play console games before the Nintendo Entertainment System as a youth.

The beginning of my video game journey was watching my dad play video games, admittedly. We played Maniac Mansion forever on NES. But once I started really playing myself, I played the original Crash and Spyro trilogies. Those will always be near and dear to me (and the newer ones are dreadful!) Also have a soft spot for Kingdom Hearts, and the original Metal Gear Solid.

I didn't see my first video games until I was 9. A friend of mine had an Atari and I played Superman and Pong on there. Superman because I was (and still somewhat am) super hero crazy. And Pong, I don't know why, it was just so addictive. After moving away from there at around 10, I would not play another video game again until in my 20s.

Hmm... I guess that my childhood was a bit unusual, as I all had for a long time was my dad's computer and he was (and still is!) a huge fantasy RPG fan...

I guess I'll post some of the games I remember.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Baldur's Gate

Lionheart

Neverwinter 1

Funnily enough I played all these games when I was around 8-10. Yep, I don't think that they were all that child-friendly either, but I turned out just fine  ;)  (I promise)

There was a pile of other games, but these are the most memorable - my dad used to work at a video game store and was a reviewer, he had tons and tons of games on his computer.

After that I got a gameboy advance and oh boy, what didn't I play would be a more suitable question.

It's a shame that I missed out on all these NES games etc, but to be honest I can't complain.

Favourite games from early childhood would be River Raid and Defender for the Atari 2600. Later I was hooked on the original Final Fantasy for NES when that came out.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
