I love the 90s era. 4:3 is a great resolution, especially tending to remind me of the era of PSX, PS2, N64, SNES, etc. I tend to find 4:3 more comfortable because everything is "all in sight." I like the simplicity and how direct it is. It feels "light" with 4:3 games. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure why they switched from 4:3 to 16:9... it feels like a poor choice to me.
With widescreen, I tend to feel as though there are more things on the field I'd have to unconsciously "do more work" on. I prefer to play games of that era more than modern games as they resonate with me more... or at least games that feel as though they could be released from that time (RPG Maker games included).

What do people mean with the screen stretching?
RPG Maker games before the MV era tend to look stretched and "ugly" in full screen or forced 16:19 that wasn't part of the game design. Emulated games such as N64 or GBA games may also look that way.
I only play RPG Maker games made before MV era in a window. (Emulated N64, SNES, and GBA games also most likely the same, but there are exceptions.) Full screen with black borders may or may not look weird depending on the game, but it's not the issue of the border; it's the in-game graphics. Most of the time, however, I find the black border a bit weird... MV and onwards, I still almost always play in a window but full screen would not look weird. My only reason for staying in full screen for MV games is due to the game automatically starting in full screen and I decided to just stay as it looks okay; most of the time I would switched to the windowed mode. I feel these games are best suited in a windowed screen. I see it as a part of the "type" of game, and it has its fans.
Then, another "type" are the ones more suited for widescreen and/or full screen, including AAA games. I can enjoy those too, but my taste leans towards 4:3 games more. Sometimes I might want to multi-task or see notifications on my PC while playing an AAA game, and I'd prefer to play them in windowed-mode in that kind of situation (which is quite often). AAA games might look weird in 4:3 for me... it really depends on the game. Some games look very weird in 4:3 and I might prefer 16:9 for those...
I don't play them on full screen. In fact, I never play RPG Maker games on full screen. It doesn't matter. I would hate if they are forcing me to though, regardless of the screen ratio.
Awesome, someone who is the same as me here. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Speaking of full screen: Regardless of screen ratio, I find myself having the "issue" of games immediately starting in full screen and I'd have to find a way out of it. Sometimes the game made it obvious, sometimes not... making me spend quite some minutes to figure out how to get out of it.
In conclusion: what "type" or "audience" do you want for your game? What speaks to your heart? What works for your situation? What kind of legacy do you want to leave?
I find myself not preferring 16:9 and wished people made games in 4:3 more, even if I'm "okay" with 16:9 games. Maybe I could be the "type" or "audience" who'd appreciate your game more for said screen preferences. Doesn't mean I won't like your game if it's in 16:9, but 4:3 speaks to me more, personally.
And if your game is actually good, I'd probably still play it regardless of screen and border choices. But if your game sucks, even if you have the perfect screen choices for me, I'd probably not continue playing it.
