What do you find ''cool''?

Hi guys,

I was just curious, what do you find cool? It's a characteristic that I've been trying to ''define'' for my characters, yet I just can't put my finger on it for there are just so many, hmm, ''cool'' things I suppose. Agent 47? Cthulhu? Spiderman? Anything goes, I'm just curious.

Also, when I google ''cool'' this is the 2nd result:

I think "cool" people tend to keep a level head in situations many others feel anxious during. The first thing that comes to mind is conversation with peers, especially new people around their age. They probably aren't even trying to be cool; they're probably just being themselves and it comes off as remarkably confident, as most young adults are faced with finding out who they are. And 'cool' people are probably somewhat ahead of that curve in social maturity. 

But there is the other kind of "cool." Usually pictured as going against the social grain and trying not to conform. Maybe even rebelling against their parents and other authoritative figures. So, there are a lot of ways to interpret that word.

Things I think are cool? Music. Science. Outer space. Dear God, that's cool. I was a dork in school. I did everyone's homework. I'm still a dork. Get me talking about botany and I'll probably pass out from losing my breath.

Cool is a pretty hard word to find a solid definition for. Not only is it one of those 'in the eye of the beholder' type words - it also has waaaaay too many ways it can be used.

There's like 90s stereotypical marketing 'cool' - backwards hat, skateboard doing a cool trick in the air, bright, vibrant colours, "graffiti"-styled lettering. Yo.

I wonder what counts as stereotypical marketing 'cool' now? (internet memes??)

There's cool-headed, which is the first thing Ms. Littlefish talked about there I would say.

There's "Ah! That's so cool!" dreamy-eyed exclamation that just simply means "This thing I am looking at right now fits all the qualifications of a thing I enjoy and thus I find it very appealing, but resort to just using the word cool because that's easier than saying WHAT I like about this thing!"

Like... it's really subjective.

What do I find cool?

- Computers are cool because you can do so many cool things with them.

- Videogames are cool because they are usually challenging, fun to play and rewarding.

- Movies\TV Shows\Animes are cool because they take you away from the real world for a while.

- Animals are cool because they're not humans.

- Music is cool because it either makes you forget or remember everything.

- And this person, this person is very cool.

A cool person by my definition is someone who can keep cool when everyone else gets hot, in other words keep their composure when everyone else starts getting emotional.

Cool, eh? The blizzard going on outside my window is pretty cold.

When I think of a person that's "cool", I usually think of the ones who are always a bit detached from everyone else. They know what's going on, but they also know there's no point in overreacting to it. While they often come off as cold, they tend to be pretty chill once you get to know them.

When it comes to subjects - history, mythology, geology, glaciology (that's the study of ice - very cool indeed!) - those are all very cool in my opinion.

Oh, and Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are pretty cool.

I find that "cool" is not only being yourself, but confident in who you are.  The cool characters never seem to care what other people think, or at least, the people they don't know.

Then I guess I am completely uncool, though that's not really new news.

Ummm, as far as people go, cool is just a perception. I think a lot of it does have to do with confidence as others have said. But it's also subjective. Because really, when you find someone cool it's typically because they have traits you admire. And for each person that varies greatly. So what one person finds "cool" is not going to be what everyone finds cool. I look at a lot of celebrities that many people find "cool" - however I find many of them highly obnoxious because they seem to be terrible people with horrible traits that I do not admire.

So really, it's perception. If you want your character to seem cool, you need to show why the people around him/her admire him. Because really, that's all it is.

Cool is just being yourself. Cool is just in the eye of the beholder. If someone thinks that you're cool, then you are.
