I usually listen to something that I might use for the area I'm working on.  Helps me get into the mindset for it.

Podcasts mostly. I'm probably subscribed to ~40 of them on iTunes.

Edit: I also listen to a lot of audiobooks. Dune = <3

@Espon: I usually do that too. I listen to certain genres when I am scripting like Daft Punk, certain types when I am mapping, and so on and so forth. The right setting does help a lot.

@Chad: Ever listen to the World War Z audiobook?

@Light: Ah. Do you not think of listening to anything or do you find it distracts you?

I'm not sure it would distract me as such.. I just don't do it.. I get focused on what I am doing and don't need the music for inspiration at that stage of the development.. :)

Yeah, it was pretty good even though all they had is the abridged version.

But they're finally coming out with the complete book next week. I think they're doing this because the movie is coming out soon.

@Light: I started listening to music while doing things when I started playing games. It helped break up the monotonous of doing repetitive tasks and made "the grind" feel not so bad, ya'know? Then it just kind of became a habit.

@Chad: I hope the voice actors for the new characters are good.

Persona 4 OST.

Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins.

Mapping and event programming is pretty extreme.

I do the same. If I'm not listening some music related to the game itself, I probably will be listening to something that inspires me like any video game OST or any music that brings me feelings related with what I'm doing.

Mainly this. Sometimes I choose a song for the map I'm making and listen to it the whole time I work on the map. Strangely doesn't get annoying (some maps take over an hour to make, and of course, that's just mapping) Sometimes I listen to songs that go with it, like I listen to a "volcano" related song when I'm making a volcano map?

When I'm working on my silly fangames, I often listen to music from the source, often an OCRemix. I listen to OCRemix most of the time when working on my RPGs anyway, fangames or not.

Besides that, I rotate different "female pop artists" that I like: Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Hannah Montana, Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Ke$ha...

I was actually just listening to these last week, getting all nostalgic about old tony hawk games and 90s rap/pop/punk rock.

I listen to trance a lot too (Armin Van Buuren, Oceanlab, Adam K & Soha, Kaskade, Monogato, Orjan Nielsen, Nadia Ali) and sometimes prog/symphonic metal (Opeth, Nightwish, Epica, Therion).

I like listening to game soundtracks too from time to time. Skullgirls, Grand Knights History, and anything by Shoji Meguro. There's some really good remixes of Shin Megami Tensei game OSTs floating around

I prefer listening to music that matches the part of the project I'm working on. For example, I'm currently working on my story. Whenever I hit a battle scenario, I'd go for a battle theme. When the scene changes to a dungeon exploring, I'd go to a dungeon-type music. It really helps me fit in to the story as if I was one of the characters. :D

And if I'm not really on the mood to do that, I just listen to one of my favorite game's OSTs, SMT: Devil Survivor 2 ~

Usually something that fits the game I'm working on or I'll have the TV on and have it on a news channel and work while listening to the news.

I listen to the music from the game I'm making because it better lets me create things that fit to that particular mood and find a song that would fit to the scene better.

@Jay: The news is pretty good. It's always nice to listen to fiction to help get in the mood ;) .

@Big T: I do that sometimes too, or I'll listen to the FF7 soundtrack :) .

When I'm doing database work I just listen to whatever I feel like at the time; for me it's not so much "what do you listen to when you work on your game" so much as what I listen to in general. If I'm awake, I'm listening to music.

However when I am eventing I like to play the music that's playing during the event so I'm in the right mood.  And when I'm mapping, I like to play that map's intended tune. It's become a habit that makes me think if I don't it won't be as good.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
