@Heretic86 I never really had a problem reading Comic Sans, the main thing for me is it's just goofy and hard to be taken seriously.

It kind of depends on the game for me. For my main project, I'm using Freefrm 721 BT, which is fancy but surprisingly legible (excuse the terrible old drawing of mine).

For other games, I use fonts depending on the atmosphere/theme. If it has no specific theme, I use Century Gothic, for cutesy games I use MV Boli, etc.

I'm using Munro and Open Sans for most of my game's text and GUIs (and a variety of different fonts for things like place names where it makes sense for the font to be themed to the location).

Munro is a very "retro", blocky, videogame style font because my game has a retro game theme.

Where text is small or readability is important (e.g. important contextual info), as well as standard dialogue, I want it to be comfortable and "bold" (from a visual point of view, not necessarily bold font), so Open Sans fits the bill well.

I love the font Komika Axis as it's very clear and gives the vibe of reading good old school comics. Here's a screenshot of the font in one of my earliest "practice" games.

I usually just peruse through free and public domain font until I find something that's easy to read, fits my game's theme and actually works when try it out. I don't really remember what any of them are called, though.

Ok, I have not made a game, yet, but.. I read a post that said "to avoid legal trouble" or there abouts..

Is it potentially law breaking to just use standard fonts?

If by standard fonts you mean default or the ones that come with Windows, there is no problem.

A font is a resource like any other and has a creator who deserves credit and reward if they desire it. But if the font came with Windows, a graphics program or RPG Maker it's probably ok to use. If in doubt, Google the name and search for terms of use. I usually use one of many free fonts out there though. Always sans serif, be kind to your player's eyes.

I need to pick a new font actually.

Font and Windowskin are in my opinion the single most important resource in a jrpg and conversely are the most underutilized.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
