Hello Everyone. I would like to create a survey because I cannot read your mind. I would know your thought, you are both smart customers and a game player at the same time. I am aware my choices that provide probably do not what you want and I might forget a choice. Please just tell me so I can add on the choice. I know this survey might be inaccurate because it is just a simple survey, not a consensus population survey. Nonetheless, I still want to know more about people in general. You can suggest what music you are listening, so I get your perspective or your feeling if you want too.

Finally, Welcome new member or old member that I did meet before and nice to meet you.

Update: The choices of music additional: Techno: Country Music: Pop Music:
Update: I meant RPG games, sorry for the typo.

Clarifying:
What genre of music do you prefer for games to have or use?

What kind of music do people like to listen to while playing games?

When music you prefer to hear in battle?

Well, you mentioned "play a game", well, in that case, I will listen to the game BGM.
Unless you mean something else?

I typically turn off all game music and put something on to listen to while I play. I typically listen to chiptunes/game bands such as I Fight Dragons and The Megas.

@TheoAllen, What types of BGM do you listen to? I mean what emotion of music it conveys when listening to whatever you like to hear. Mad, Happy, Sad, or indifferent. I see what are saying I probably not be careful when I submit the tread. I meant RPG games.

@kamuipsyus, thank you for reminding me that some people do not listen to a game music, they could music listen to a regular music.

Well you kinda forgot an important category: "classical"/film music. It's very popular in traditional jrpgs (think of the final fantasy franchise, especially ff15, Kingdom Hearts, etc.)

I mean, do I have an option when playing the game? I listen to whatever the dev throws at me.
It will be orchestra if I play Skyrim/medieval themed RPG. It will be music with a modern instrument if it's sci-fi.

But to answer your question (I think I get what you mean).
When not in battle, I prefer something calming like this (the music starts kicking at 40 seconds forward)
When in battle, I prefer something like this, idk much about genres. So I'll just put this here. I think it's like dubstep or something. Also probably the style that influenced me the most.
(well, Starbound is an RPG, right?)

I assume the question is what genre of music do you prefer for games to have or use?

Or are you asking what kind of music do people like to listen to while playing games?

If it's the 1st question, I don't usually have a preference. I'm open to all kinds of music and I think as long as the music used for a game is suitable for the scene, mood and vibe of the game, I'm good with it. Although some of my favorite game ost's usually have good variety of genres, like jazz, classical, piano, rock, pop, electronic etc.. Or have songs that combines those genres.

I would like to see more games make use of the heavy metal genre though. I'm a rock and heavy metal fan so I might be biased there. Not only is it an untapped market with lots of potential, but it would go well with most battle rpg's. So I'd love to see an rpg with some headbanging and crushing modern metal. Most of the metal stuff that's out there in rpgs is usually scarce, or wimpy and dated sounding in my opinion.

Now if it's the 2nd question, I don't usually listen to music when playing games other than the game music itself. For the type of games I play, I feel it kills the immersion, or hampers the experience since there may be sound alerts or dialogue to listen to.

Well I think that fitting the atmosphere of the game is more important than musical preference.

That is true. However, my ears might hear different from your ears. That is what I worried about.

Sorry for all with confusion with unclear questions which can break up into multiple questions.

@MushroomCake28, thank you for a suggestion on the choice. Sadly, I cannot add more choice of classical music into the choice, so I have written it down.

@TheoAllen, thank you for helping me break down the questions.

Replying to edit questions. Which, in my opinion, that renders the poll useless.

What genre of music do you prefer for games to have or use?
Something that fits the game. Not every game fit with a rock theme, so I can't say a specific thing about.
You give example, and it will have an answer. You generalize, and the answer will "it depends".

What kind of music do people like to listen to while playing games?
Either game BGM, not listening anything, or other music in their playlist.

When music you prefer to hear in battle?
Something that fits with the game theme.

That is true. However, my ears might hear different from your ears. That is what I worried about.
In that case, you need a feedback for a particular BGM you put in your game. Frankly, these particular questions don't help you to decide what kind of music you need to put in your game.

@TheoAllen, thank you for responding back so quickly, I do this to get a general feeling and I have to pick myself. I can take your opinions into account when I have picked music that has a similar sound which can hard to decide. This place is just for brainstorm and for check my reality.

I guess my pick would be *the kind of music that best accompanies the scene*
if I'm supposed to be at a medieval town, the last thing I want to hear is MIDI music.

@gstv87, I understand and yes, I have summit the game first on the project, so you look into it. However, I do not follower of music and I do not play variable of games. I might being bias and ignore others perspectives. I am invision my game to be a fantasy game which both technology and magic has their place in the world.

That's not really so simple to answer.
The music needs to fit with the game's world and events. For exemple rock or heavy metal music hardly fits in a medieval-fantasy setting. You can have some more freedom on battle musics usually, but you still need specific musics for sad scenes, romantic scenes and so on.

Sad there is no punk rock choice... but there is an acid jazz one.

@TWings, What do you like to hear simple? Please do not overthink regardless of going into detail.
@samkfj, I cannot add more to the choices. The system does allow me to do so. I will write it down, so you do need to worry.

Well, this is kinda hard to answer it depends on the track which is playing.
Actually every genre can be ok if it fits into the game.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
