I guess I just never did get into the Final Fantasy Games. I just have a hard time trying to follow where they are at in a timeline, and that is somewhat of a turn-off for me. For instance, I have played 1-3, 7, 9-10, & 13. 1-3 were pretty self-explanitory, ancient times/medieval. Then we have 7, which was more of a future dystopia type thing. Then with 10/X, we sort of went back in time a bit by going back to stuff like ruins and temples and everything. Then even further into the future with 13. I am not sure what games happened when in their storyline.
Now, with games like Skyrim, the lore was so well planned out, that I am finding things throughout Skyrim that date all the way back to Elder Scrolls Arena (and yes, I actually own and still play arena. I pride myself on being one of the few people who can beat that game without rage quitting). And because of this lore, I have bought every single Elder Scrolls game, and have played each one multiple times. And in turn, Elder Scrolls has almost single-handedly shaped my game design process. After those games, I feel like before I even start a game, I must absolutely have all of my lore planned out ahead of time. And then, during the game, I leave pieces of it laying around for the players to figure out slowly the history behind the characters and areas.
Now, lets say FF14 suddenly has a direct reference going back to Chaos or Gilgamesh (and I dont mean as end-game, DLC bosses like in FF13-2), I may even enjoy that game a bit more just because it makes me think back to what happened and when.
