Breath of Fire 3 is my favorite too, however I've heard so many good things about 4 and I never rented it long enough beat it/get to all the MIND BLOWING stuff people talk about. ;__; I used to REALLY, REALLY love BoF2, and I'd replay it so many times, but these days I can hardly get through it all since I just get slogged down by the...everything. I guess my tastes have changed! I'd still say they've all been pretty big influences, if only because I was like "DRAGONS ARE THE BEST THING EVER" because of them, and then proceeded to make things entirely about how awesome dragons were.
I have to agree with everything you just said about BoF

As will I. While my personal favourite is 2, I have to say that 3 was just amazing all round... and the soundtrack was brill! The final battle theme was just... whoa.

... Now I want to listen to it all over again. x3

Lots of games, but specifically Zelda for its puzzles and boss fights. Numerous Final Fantasies and Chrono Trigger for its story progress and twists and Pokemon for their unique game play concept.

Final Fantasy IV, for the DS, and III. I really enjoy those two (because I haven't finished either of them yet).

And Chrono Trigger, though I haven't finished that either -_- I suck at playing RPGs.

Also, I think Magical Starsign is quite inspiring. Though it's quite cheesy, I like the music and the battle system. It revolves around planets, and six characters: the main character can be either Light or Dark, powering up at either night or day, and other characters: Wind, Wood, Earth, Fire and Water. When the representing planet falls into the right zone, the character gets a power up so long as the planet is in the right zone, though the planets move. It's really fun. Here are some screenies:

It was Final Fantasy VI that inspired me. In fact, the first game I was ever making was a FFVI fangame. I was using a software my brother coded from scratch, but I lost that software and then found 2003, and then XP. xD

That's not all of course. Chrono Trigger vastly inspired me. I liked how different it was from the other games during that time, and I wanted to make a game with that kind of battle system for a long time.

The first RPG I ever played was the Phantasy Star games on the old systems, and was thus the base inspiration you could say. I still love those games. I would play my copies, but I don't have a powercord! T.T

I didn't get to grow up in the golden age like everybody else,(1997, damn) but I got a few influences through the powers of emulation.

Tales of the Drunken Paladin: Oh man, this game was hilarious. It had some good comedic writing and checking every object to see what the protagonist would say was fun. Didn't get to beat it though.

Dragon Quest 3 and 6:These were both awesome games. Simple plot, disguised as good storylines(in case of DQ 6). The pixel work in both Super Famicom games was really good too. Despite all the grind-y and niche like gameplay, the battles were so damn fun to look at(in the case of the DS port of DQ 6).

I guess I am just an odd one...

I would say that the Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest Monsters series' were my biggest influence. Pokemon is high up there as well. Followed also by Dragon Age and Skyrim.

I must say Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire 2 for sure. They make interesting characters and choices that feel like they matter.

Chrono Trigger: Things you do in the past have a direct effect on the future.

BoF 2: You recruit people for your own town. THat is pretty cool.

My first RPG was Pokemon so that influenced me a whole lot..but my most enjoyed during my youth that I always do annual playthroughs of is Paper Mario. That game influenced me even more, so much that I think that game was the sole reason why I wanted to make games once I got older, but I can barely remember. Final Fantasy IV on the GBA was the kicker for me. I never played such a fun rpg, and to me it's still one of my favorites.

I get inspiration from all sorts of games, as generic as that may sound lol. In the end, right now I can't think of any RPG I wanna mimic or is a heavy influence, every game I've ever played has probably had something to offer for me,which would become an influence later on, even the ones I didn't like.
This is exactly how I feel. Every game no matter how bad it is, offers something great. The only way to truly make a great game is to take the parts of the games you love. I do believe if you keep design and things like that consistent with what you love, you will attract a niche of players that will want more of it, because it will be unique and not offered anywhere else.

Aside from that, Final Fantasy series and many other games have motivated me to make games.

I guess I just never did get into the Final Fantasy Games. I just have a hard time trying to follow where they are at in a timeline, and that is somewhat of a turn-off for me. For instance, I have played 1-3, 7, 9-10, & 13. 1-3 were pretty self-explanitory, ancient times/medieval. Then we have 7, which was more of a future dystopia type thing. Then with 10/X, we sort of went back in time a bit by going back to stuff like ruins and temples and everything. Then even further into the future with 13. I am not sure what games happened when in their storyline.

Now, with games like Skyrim, the lore was so well planned out, that I am finding things throughout Skyrim that date all the way back to Elder Scrolls Arena (and yes, I actually own and still play arena. I pride myself on being one of the few people who can beat that game without rage quitting). And because of this lore, I have bought every single Elder Scrolls game, and have played each one multiple times. And in turn, Elder Scrolls has almost single-handedly shaped my game design process. After those games, I feel like before I even start a game, I must absolutely have all of my lore planned out ahead of time. And then, during the game, I leave pieces of it laying around for the players to figure out slowly the history behind the characters and areas.

Now, lets say FF14 suddenly has a direct reference going back to Chaos or Gilgamesh (and I dont mean as end-game, DLC bosses like in FF13-2), I may even enjoy that game a bit more just because it makes me think back to what happened and when.

The Kingdom Hearts series. It showed me that even though a game may look.... (how should I say it).... childish(?) it can still have an amazing story that appeals to all ages. That and Final Fantasy X (being the first RPG I played) inspire me to make a game with a breathtaking story first and let everything else come after.

Chrono Trigger.

Its amazing gameplay inspired me to focus mainly on story/gameplay. Seriously, I played the game like 8-something times and it's still fun.

Final Fantasy for basicly getting in touch with RPG's at all. Tales and STar oCean for showing fun with different battlesystems and other gameplay elements, with Star Ocean beeing my vote the playstation RPG ever (aside from the usual FF7 yada yada, mainly for opening up the western market, it was THE milestone in making JRPG's popular, wether you like the game or not personally). Breath of Fire 3&4 for having really nice gameplay elements and twisted or dual kind of storylines.

TES for giving an idea about how big of a world you can actually create, while still having extreme immersion and lore.

Kingdom Hearts for it's very own special feeling and the really nice crafting system.

Golden Sun 1 & 2 for offering some of the most complete gameplay experiences ever, non tedious battle system, interesting character development system and a load of puzzles, really they're just awesome.

SMT for really testing the limits of what you can actually make your audience endure heh.

Sadly never played Chrono Trigger/Cross or any of the Phantasy Star games aside from one on PS2, which didn't really got me into it.

Oh and ofc Legend of Dragoon for beeing one of the most unknown jewels on the playstation, while beeing a really vast and awesome game.

Honestly no rpg has really inspired me to try to make one. Oddly suprising that I haven't tried though since jrpg's are my absolute favorite type of game.

What got me was kinda random and purely by chance. There I was, bored out of my mind, surfing 4chan's video game boards when I came across an rpg maker thread that was recommending rpg maker games that were of high quality. I looked them over and picked the one I thought would give me the most laughs.

I had just download Tales of the Drunken Paladin. It blew me away, it was more than just silly jokes. It was incredibly witty and well written and just a pure joy to experience overall. He had managed to weave all this silliness into a form I could somehow take seriously.

Now I'm not going to be taking the heavy comedy route he took but his game definitely sticks in my mind as inspiration for my own.

I guess I just never did get into the Final Fantasy Games. I just have a hard time trying to follow where they are at in a timeline, and that is somewhat of a turn-off for me.
Totally not on topic and almost a month old reply but almost none of the final fantasy games take place in the same universe, they are usually totally unrelated games with similar mythos.

alright back to the normal topic.

Basically the RPG's of the SNES era. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FF6, Earthbound...Pokemon also had a big influence on me as well. Mother 3 (Earthbound 2) was also an influence, even though I havent beaten it yet.

I never played any of the Phantasy Star games, so can't comment on those.

My early influences were Wizardry (before it was even numbered), Might and Magic, and games of that ilk.

Then came FF2 (IV) which was crazy good for its time. FF3(VI) is still one of my all-time favorites.

I did the write your own text adventure thing, considered writing an engine for MUD's in Java.

The Baldur's Gate Trilogy was a huge step forward (at least in my eyes) as to what an RPG could be. Arcanum: Of Clockworks and Magick Obscura is another one.

Recently games like VtM: Bloodlines and The Witcher have been really inspiring. But now that I've actually committed to making a commercial game I play the others with a completely different mindset. Always asking, "Why did they do it this way? Why didn't they do this? Wow! that worked great, or Man, that sucked" I'm especially going back and playing the "retro" games I've got for my DS - the FF's, DQ's, etc... and some older PS games like Wild Arms and the Star Ocean games. (another one I started but never finished - and I can't remember why I stopped, something must have come up IRL).

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
