what is a steam key and how do i use it?

Hopefully this is in the right place and if not, please move to the appropriate location.


Spent several hours trying to find specific answers to my questions and couldn't find any, so here it is: I have a Steam key for MV when I preordered through web store. Do I have to purchase another copy of MV on Steam in order to use it? I'm not sure how all this works as I'm not familiar with Steam. Thanks

No, that steam key allows you to activate the same program on steam free of charge.


If you have steam installed (free) then you not only have the steam shop, but also a menu option to activate products on steam - that is what requires the steam key.


And what you get is the same program that you have currently as standalone.


The steam version is neccesary if you want to purchase DLC for MV through steam (sometimes cheaper as steam has different sale times than this website) and want to access the workshop (sharing your works with other steam MV users). The steam version can also easily be switch between languages, I've both installed to have one english and one german GUI.


However, some people do not like to have steam on their computers because it will take up additional space and sometimes download traffic.

Just as an addendum to the above: there are also LOTS of places on the internet that sell bundles of steam keys, and lot of those bundles just happen to be lots of DLC for RM at a VEEERY low price.


Dalph pointed me to my favorite bookmark. Its a link to a search of RM specific Engines and DLC with a bias for ones that are on sale.
