I am not artistically inclined. I find myself overtly jealous of those who create with brush and canvas. By nature, I am very math driven.

In a recent post a discussion emerged regarding what constitutes Art.

This evening, I stumbled across an interesting interview from GGRM:

    What is Art to you?

Wether it be music, writing, painting, architecture, etc. Art is expression of emotion and/or thought given form (use the term loosly) by the person creating it.

As I have said on this forum before it is impossible to judge art outside of the technical part it is a matter of like/dislike not good/bad.

    That's my opinion anyway :)

I was asked this in high school by my art teacher, and I gave a long drawn out answer.. and I don't even remember what it was now. But, for me now, it is definitely a form of expression, and to some other extent, communication. It is not bottled into some specific medium either, whether it be with brushes on canvases, or playing instruments. It could be how you conduct yourself in a situation, or something even more obscure and intimate known of only by a select few.

It kind of shines out, blatantly, despite it's form, like some purposeful attack on your senses, that can grip you right down to your emotions. Art is a powerful tool. It's a creative spark that can catch you on fire, and at times set the world ablaze as it seems.

    Also, I like cinnamon rolls.

I'm a simple man. Something that makes me comfortable just by looking/hearing at it is an art. Even a neat source code with a really structured workflow and easy to understand I consider as art (and I'm actually a technical person rather than an artist).

Art is a form of self-expression which intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. Or something that is collected the dust if no one knows about it. However, art can be a technical skill such as Art of War, the art of persuasion, or art of negotiation.

Anything man produces can be seen as art if you set your eyes to it.
Duchamp's famous fontaine (fountain) is a common urinal.
Malevitch produced a painting of white on white. (Also exists in black.)

From that, "everyone's a critic" and everyone's opinion works.

I've worked on projects (not just games) without inspiration, and the quality of my work heavily suffered from it when I did, so I don't agree with that image at all. I guess that when art is your job, there's no other choice than to work on it, even if you have no ideas, but for me that was the reason to never pursue a career in anything that required creativity.

Anyway, many people have different ideas of what's art. Some consider a broad range of things as art, while others view it more narrowed or only accept the traditional forms.

I think the term 'art' can have different definitions, just like many other words do, and a lot depends on the context.

So, on the one hand, I'd definite 'art' as something that's a creative product of a human mind.
On the other hand, art has some degrees of criteria and standards that make it so, because although many things can be expressions of creativity, not all of them can be considered art. Although the boundary can get pretty blurry at times, because art is not something that can be measured, so a lot of it is up to our subjective interpretation.

Another thing - art can be a product of nature too, and not necessarily of a human mind. Beautiful and fascinating phenomena in nature can be called art in the right context.
