For me, it would have to be the piano. Sure, I play the flute and I love the sounds it makes, but there's something just magical about the sounds the piano makes. It could go from soft to strong and soft again in seconds.  A piano does things a flute just can't...

I'm taken on journeys with its sound, like such...

What about you? What's your favorite musical instrument and why?

If you play one, what is your favorite musical instrument THAT IS NOT the one you play? And why?

I really should just list what I love about every instrument instead of my favorite. Because I can't pick a single favorite.

String instruments? Cellos have a range that closely mimic the range of a human singing voice, which gives it a very wonderful tone and character when playing melodies.  But, the violas have an extremely unique tonal range being one of the only true "middle" voices in a symphonic orchestra. They have this soft, buttery goodness that no other instrument really possesses. The string bass has a gruff tone that I really enjoy. Not many people utilize its higher register; whereas, I really enjoy the sort of tinny and grungy sound this instrument can make if it were ever given a melody to play.

While I do play viola as well, violin is my major instrument but it can actually sound sort of shrill at times. Oh, well.

While I really love the comical sound the bassoon can make, just listen to the bassoon solo from The Rite of Spring. That's why I love that instrument. The register of this instrument is similar to the cello, so same story. It can really sing.

I'll be here for 8 hours.

So, I'll shorten this post this way. Instruments I don't like. Some of you might know that I have an almost comical dislike of steel drums and marimbas.

Although a pain in the rear to play, I enjoyed the F. Horn.

You get a little bit of everything with it. While high in difficulty, when done right, the sound can't be beat.

I love:

Guitar - Electric and acoustic - Rock metal type here so this is a foundation of most of the music I listen to

Violin - Electric and acoustic - It can be part of the background or taking the lead, subtle or strong

Saxophone - a very distinct and pleasing sound

PIano - pretty much same as @Iron Crock

Citar is a phenomenal Instrument and great for a change of sound from Western music

Dont ask me to choose between them, it isnt happening

Piano for sure. You see it is very emotional, vibrant and personal.

Secong goes the violin.

Last but not least goes the electric guitar of course.

Violin. But I found myself to be a sucker to the Shakuhachi (japanese flute) recently.
