Preface
This is a little (not so little anymore) project idea I made up for Halloween in 2016 and it ended up becoming a little more than I intended to. This project served two purposes for me. First of which was to try and reignite my passion for game development which had waned in a year that had had a lot of downs for me. The second of which was to have my sort of personal farewell project with Rpg Maker Vx Ace as I finally take to experimenting in MV.

Title:
What Lies Within
Plot Synopsis:
You play as Fay Everhart a young adventurous girl and resident of the town of Spooksville (I imagine her around 10 years old) setting out on the holiday of the Night of Hallows with her self-appointed rival (friend) Ray. Fay drags Ray into investigating the warnings not to go past the sign that represents the town's outer-limits on the holiday. Rumors and reports say that disappearances and supernatural things happen beyond the town's outer-limits on this day.

Of Course Fay is not the one to be stopped by a mere sign and she presses forward anyway. She wants a night of adventure and little does she know that she is going to get far more than she bargain for when she comes upon the supernatural manor of Lord Darkmoore. So step in with Fay and find out What Lies Within!

Main Characters
:
Fay Everhart: The young adventurous girl mentioned above. She has a lofty attitude and thinks very highly of herself. She is a a major fan of witches but only the nice ones! She's also known to crack a joke every know and then so she hopes she can bring you a chuckle along the way, she also might or might not know she is a video game character. Her favorite thing to do for fun is to play retro video games.

Sivelle Moonbeam
: A fairy that has come to reside in a tree in the courtyard of Darkmoore Manor. She is rather timid and shy which leads her to agreeing and going all with others rather easily. She's content to just pass her time in her tree and live out her live but sadly she meets Fay and gets swept up in her whirlwind of adventure; along the way she acts as something of an enabler to Fay. Don't let her timid nature fool you though, she is a pretty reliable ally! Sivelle's favorite pastime is to play instruments.

Jenkins Dearborn: Lord Darkmoore's faithful and loyal butler, an aged war veteran who never lost the desire to serve and watch over others. Fay and Sivelle meet him or rather run into him (actually its just Fay that runs into him, literally) during their exploration of the manor. Jenkins truly cares for his master and wishes to help him however he can. Jenkins is a little old-fashioned something that's a bit odds with Fay's tremendous personality, never the less he provides some much needed guidance and wisdom to the group. Doubt what an old war veteran will bring to the party? He'll Purr-suade you otherwise! Jenkins is a collector of war memorabilia, particularly medals and badges of honor.

Lord Darkmoore: The mysterious master and Lord of Darkmoore Manor. The heart of Fay's adventure requires her to come face to face with the man himself or what's left of him. He's highly intelligent, wealthy and a man with numerous skills and aptitudes. He has a serious personality unlike Fay and isn't the type to crack a joke or stray from his intended goal. Darkmoore enjoys many things, writing and reading to name a couple but most of all he has an affection for cloaks.

Boorigard: The door man of Darkmoore manor or at least that's what he says he is. Fay meets him early on in her adventure and he provides some much needed context to what is happening to her. Boorigard follows Fay on her quest and provides what help he can (or is within balance reasons of gameplay). As you might guess, Boorigard is a werewolf (nope, yeah he's a ghost) and is quite fond of making ghost related jokes whenever possible.

Gameplay Style:

Gameplay is pure turn-based and it uses the default battle system with the hud aspects of Yanfly's well know engine for ace. The sort of unique twist to combat is that all of your skills and spells rotate out upon use.

For example it might go like this: Spell that heals hp over time ->Gets swapped out to->Spell that heals moderate hp->Gets swapped out to->Spell that heals all hp->Gets swapped back to->Spell that heals hp over time.

Learning the order of your swapped out skills and when to take advantage of them are just as important as what the skills do themselves.

There is also a limited amount of mp that must be considered when making use of your abilities. Each action only takes one mp but you have a small finite amount. Mp can be restored by expending your AP (The TP gauge).

Character Progression:
There are no experience points in the game (well there are but its hidden to the player :rwink:). Instead you rank up your party after boss encounters for each section. This makes proper skill usage and learning your enemies important. Upgrading your equipment with earned or found Ecto serves as a means to power up your party. The player can also collect a character's Favorite item to equip and gain access to special moves.

@barnzie8 My Test file I used throughout the game ended up being over 8hrs, granted that's not an exact measurement or anything. Difficulty is subjective to me. I guess it depends on your level of skill at rpgs. This is isn't a game you can quite play like a normal rpg; spamming skills non-stop (technically not possible since skills rotate out anyway) or not thinking about the after effects of your actions will cause you problems. You need to consider which skills come next in your rotation and keep track of your limited mp. That being said I don't think its too difficult or anything. Since there aren't any traditional levels, once you gain equipment upgrades for an area you sort of have enough of an advantage to put you over the edge. There are a number of sort of puzzles in the game to though, they range from finding passwords, to discerning information and organizing it in a logical way.

Sound okay? If you are still interested after that, let me know.

@AceOfAces_Mod Great, I'll add you to the tester list if you don't have any more needed information or qualms.

I could help out, as long as you don't need my results before next weekend (this weekend's out unless something changes schedule wise, but next week I only work 2 days of the week).

@bgillisp Sure, there isn't a rush per se. It would be nice though to be able to get the full release this year, especially since this was meant for Halloween. I'm happy to have the help though, especially from an experienced member like yourself. I'll send you the link.

So far, there seems to be a little bit of a consensus about difficulty and the enemies being a little too hard hitting. I do recommend keeping up on healing moves if you're playing. The second party member Sivelle has a useful spell in soul suck that let's her drain hp to recover herself and attack at the same time. It sort of let's you heal without needing to use one of her better healing spells or an item.

I think I've decided though on boosting the characters base hp stat by 50 pts. If anybody finds it too difficult to advance I can upload a copy with the boosted hp and hopefully that helps.

edit-re-uploaded the change with the boosted hp. Hopefully, that's a little more lee-way for everybody.

Ok thanks as i said, will download and play after work on phone now. It seems you want this to be more on the difficult side correct, or at least want more thought than attack and heal?

Yes and no.

I do want there to be enough lee-way for people though to have a little breathing room. I don't think there is anything wrong with making a difficult to play game but I still need to find a perspective that isn't entirely my own. I tend to do really well when playing rpgs and adapt to combat scenarios quickly so sometimes I forget that some people need a little extra breathing room to learn it gradually. So when I make a game, I make a game that appeals to my enjoyment of combat.

edit-I guess I want the difficulty to come from needing to strategize rather than more artificial aspects like just raw numbers.

also skill balancing and power levels, etc...are something I want to get a read on from other players.

Thanks you two, I'll send you the link shortly. You should appreciate the game Chester; there is a cat party member! Not as cool as you though.

As for everyone that's testing, let me know if you see any font cut-offs. I bumped it up last time I uploaded and so I'm trying to gauge what's a good size to work with.

Thanks for everyone's efforts.

edit-I've switched the font and it should address the issues thanks for the feedback. I've also gotten a few minor errors and a couple bugs cleaned up because of the feedback. Its amazing what slips by you, even when you play your own game so many times!  :o

Okay so after talking with bgillisp. I've made a couple crucial changes.

-Encounter rate issue should be better as I've adjusted the formula.

-Standard enemies have all gone through a 15% hp reduction (bosses and special monsters remain unchanged though)

I'd appreciate if you re-download. I had to do a new link because of mediafire troubles, apologies.

This will also include the previously mentioned font change and some minor changes.

Hey, everyone. Wanted to gauge where people were at with this; I know things were hectic with the holidays and some people maybe finishing winter school semesters, etc...Just checking if people were still interested or still could playtest. I've only gotten some amount of feedback from like half of you, so just wanted to make sure.

Thanks, everybody and let's have a great 2017.
