We all see those games with over played and long drawn out cliches that we seem to not be able to avoid our selves as developers. Examples are the emo protagonist, the "save the princess" and the "Theres a great and powerful darkness .... "

These things drive me up the wall, especially when done poorly.

What are the things that make you cringe when playing a game, RPG Maker Made or not?

Really, really bad art. Unless it's bad to the point of funny. And cheesy voice acting. Actually, that more so makes me laugh.

Man I hate poor voice acting. One of the worst things about FF13, particularly Vanilla and the other one who was always with her. Also Snow and Hope and... Yeah that game was ok but the voice acting often made me switch it off.

There's even points in Horizon Zero Dawn where I'm like ffs.. should have got a better voice actor.

This first scene of many games.
“Wake up!
Wake up sleepyhead!
You overslept again!
You’re going to be late for something important!
Don’t forget to talk to your mom first before you leave the house though!”

When the game's predominant religious organization turns out to be secretly evil, or it turns out their deity wants to blow up the world for who-knows-what reason. At this point, I think it would be tough to even find a game where that doesn't happen. Lunar, maybe?

Same goes for governments. Any government. It always turns out to be run by villains. "Shocking". Bonus points if you play a government agent who has to make the tough choice between your job and doing the right thing. *groans* :kaoswt2:

To be fair, governments are, nine times out of ten, largely villainous in the real world too. But moving on...

I will switch gears and go with super vanilla battle systems where mashing the A button is typically all it takes to win a battle. If all you care about is the story you want to tell, fine. Just don't waste my time with meaningless and uninteresting battles to make the game drag on. It seems like once story took over as the main focus for most RPGs, mechanics fell by the wayside.

Edge.

Boy, nothing turns me away from a game quicker than a "dark and mature story".
Like I love some dark and mature games. Mother 3, Persona series, and Soulsborne to name a few.
but ughh... a lot of these types of games just lack any of the charm that the above mentioned have.
You ever seen a ten year old child curse and brag about how much he smokes, or drinks?
Trying to sound like an adult?
That's what these games look/sound like to me. Someone trying too hard.

This is where a lot of games fall apart. They see games like FF7, FF10, FF9 (Vivi), Mother and various other games that have darker themes and they try to imitate that but it falls apart because they don't have a proper direction to go in. Its just "edge" for the sake of "edge"

I think this is too far removed from discussing aspects of actually making a game, so..

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
