Hello all, I am new to RPG Maker and just recently started tinkering with a friends VX Ace. I have been modding/making mods for other games for a while so this immediately spurred my interest as something that could take up vast quantities of my time, so here I am starting my adventure. What I would like to ask your opinion(s) on is... Should I purchase VX Ace or the new MV? I really like the years of community work that has gone into VX Ace, even though I haven't yet looked over all the content thoroughly I have seen some of the games created using the custom scripts and it looks great. I am hearing some bad things about MV and being new it will take a year or two (most likely) for the community to really bring out its potential. I imagine none of the scripts for VX Ace will work on the new MV so I have to ask... If I am looking to start making games, which version do you guys recommend?

I am leaning toward VX Ace at the moment and maybe waiting a year to see how MV comes along?

There is just one other thing, with VX Ace... My modders instinct is telling me that there is most likely a series of good scripts that all have high interoperability that many people prefer. I know I am just starting out and maybe getting ahead of myself but does anyone have any tips on what scripts to look out for? I noticed the Luna Engine right away and the animated battlers/monsters scripts, I know its largely a matter of tastes but I am just curious what some of the veterans here use.

Thanks ahead of time for any advice and I look forward to seeing more of what has been done and can be done with this program.

Ace has several limitations that have been removed by MV, but on the other hand it can be found in a sale with 80% off usually every other month.

MV has a lot more advantages, but it's extremely new (less than a week since release) and you won't get it for a better price for at least six months.

Main Ace limitations: max screen size 640x480 fixed in code and windows only

MV added export to mobiles and removed all limits on the code

If mobile export or larger screens are important for you, then you have to use MV.

What does the Java-script in MV really mean? Does that mean that (eventually) we can do more with custom scripts, etc?

Ace used Ruby for scripting, MV uses javascript. In both cases that can be used to replace large parts of the engine - after four years of community work, the Ace master script list contained over 1000 scripts to change almost every aspect, including scripts that turned Ace into a platformer, an action-RPG, a visual novel engine or more.
MV only has about a hundred plugins/scripts as of now (because some scripters got the engine as betatester), but it is expected that it will exceed Ace because the engine is completely open (Ace had some base functions hidden and fixed in a dll)

@Snarkyfork,

There's a few Action-rpg scripts for Ace, I recommend Falcao Pearl ABS, it's good if you want to stick with ace's style and have it be the simplest to use.

As some one who has Ace, I'm waiting untill MV goes on sale (probbaly around The RPG sale they have one in April/May and hopefull MV will be 70-80% cheaper, so like 20-30 USD.)

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
