Hi Guys,

I have been curious to what are your favorite types of map to create and the ones you find a bit tiresome to create?

I personally love designing big cities, but then filling them up with NPCs can sometimes be a bit of a task, especially with diverse chat!

Other than that, I like creating maps that have rivers and waterfalls, I feel once they are done the waterfalls and rivers etc look really nice in game (a lot of moving water, bugs scurrying around etc)!

I am not very keen on creating plains, its more because they aren't meant to be jam packed but I can never decide exactly how much I need to fill it up without it looking empty!! haha

I assume this is the right place for this type of post :)

Haven't done a lot but I've enjoying mapping for sewer/laboratory areas so far the most which may seem odd but it's for a horror game. I don't really dislike mapping anything in particular but housing is always somewhat tiresome because you make a house you have to decide if its locked or not or just have it sit there unrealistically with no options. If you decide it's unlocked then you gotta map a living room. If the house is two stories then you gotta map a up stairs....probably get my point :D

I haven't quite found a favorite yet but I did really enjoy working on my latest interior map (mostly because there was very little photoshop editing needed). My castle exterior map went through several designed as I tried to put the castle structure together. I based it off the sample Castle too and it was still a fuse!

My favorites are probably forests first, then interiors. Least favorites are cities because exterior buildings are my weakness. I need more practice.

My favorite has to be interiors, with my least, favorite being forests and er, dungeons in general.  It's mostly, because I don't want a dungeon to be walk from point a to point b and do want some challenges in the dungeon.  I am in the middle of trying to improve my dungeons, but alas I think I need some sort of tutorial on that, at least, to give me some place to start.  (^_^) But that wasn't the question, so yes, interiors are my favorite.

I like mapping cities and towns and planning where to put each type of building. Maybe because I used to play sim city a lot.

Interiors are difficult to me so they are what I least enjoy drawing. I find difficult not to make all the interiors quite similar.

I've always liked designing "final maps", with fog, effects, badass music and awesome cinematics. It really gets me into the atmosphere.

The maps I dislike making the most, however, are generic maps : Maps that you would see in every game ever.

For example, I'm currently designing a Horror Game, but it annoys me because I have to plan my features and not give everything to the player yet, meaning that I have to make generic-type maps in-between the different "important maps". (An important map being a map where the player finds something new, such as a new mechanic like a flashlight)

I absolutely love doing forests. But, I also love doing interiors. Especially if it's a place where someone lives because you sort of describe the person by the appearance of their house. Dungeons are pretty enjoyable too because I like making puzzles and giving a flow to the area. Cities are my absolute weakness. I think all my buildings look kind of lame and that I need to get better at mapping with the building exteriors.

Would definitely want advice on this I find these the hardest to map!

To my mind, this isn't really about principles of game making.  It's more a poll without voting.  This could go to a couple of different places, but probably General Lounge is best.

I like all of them! XD I took a course in architectural design and city planning, so I'm always gunning to showcase my skills in mapping as an art form. Interiors, exteriors, etc... I can spend hours crafting the perfect map. Then it's crunch time to do other stuff because I spent like 60% of my time on art :D  I love it...

I like making maps that are meant to stand out relative to other places in the game, like an important place to the game's story, a unique town or city, etc...My least favorite is the opposite of that; I can barely stand to do interior house maps of just random town/city houses because they all feel relatively the same even when you switch it up a bit. I'd say I need to improve on making building exteriors more interesting to.

I like everything regarding mapping, it's what I enjoy doing the most regarding game making and it's probably what I can do best too.

Nature is easier to make because it's random so you can use your imagination most of the time for it.

Villages and cities have to make sense though and be more symmetric (especially the latter), plus they are definitely harder to make and I'm a man that loves challenges.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
