What would you recommend getting in the steam sale?

I'm currently using the default tiles as I like the look of them. I'm wondering what I should consider getting from the sale?

It really depends what kinds of games you want to make.

The Futuristic Tiles and associated sound pack go very well with the classic RTP for making futuristic sci-fi games.

The High Fantasy packs have a unique look for making Ultima-style fantasy RPGs (i.e. 2D maps).

If the Game Character Generator is on sale, it's very useful to create custom characters.

The music packs are always good, but I'd listen to samples from them to see which ones have music and/or sound effects you'd like.

Plus the Futuristic and fantasy hero bust sets.

It depends on what you want your game to look like.

The largest variety of resources are in RTP style.

The ones that have unique tiles are :

- RMDS, RMDS+

- Rural Farm Tiles

- Pixel Myth : Germania

- High Fantasy, Mythos Horror

- Old School Modern

All the others should fit in with the RTP, although the following have a slightly different style :

- Royal, Evil Castle, Dungeons & Volcanoes, Halloween, Sci-Fi, Wild West Tiles (All made by the same artist)

I recommend getting "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary" off of Steam for $13.59 USD or the Steam version of "RPG Maker VX Ace" for $17.49. Pretty awesome deal! Still need to look at the resources on sale as well.

I've moved this thread to General Discussion. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

This has nothing to do with making commercial games.

Hmm I wanted more RTP style then anything. I loved the look of Pixel Myth : Germania and would pay a small fortune if there was many 100's if not 1000's of more tiles for that set alone. Unfortunately there is not.

To give you an idea I'm building mostly with the RTP Set. Vibrate colors and it looks great. I really enjoy the way it works I'm building a more open world game as well with it.

The High Fantasy looks amazing but then again it's way to dark and grim.

I also am not going Sci-fi more fantasy castle / mystic. So pretty much RTP by default.

I'd recommend getting the "Old School Modern" Pack 1 and 2. I bought them and am very pleased, it's also easy to make addons to the tilesets and sprites.

Broforce! You can blow things up and...wait, that's not what we are talking about? :p

In all seriousness, I have managed to use some select pieces from the Rural Tileset well with the RTP.

Which graphic packs you might want to get now depends on what is your world's setting. The following are in the RTP style :

- Arabian Nights

- Modern Day

- Modern Shop

- Zombie Survival

- Futuristic Tiles

- Fantastic Building : Medieval

- Royal Tileset

- Evil Castle Tileset

- Dungeons & Volcanoes

- Halloween Tiles

- Sci-Fi Tiles

- Wild West Tiles

- Materials for VX : Samurai

Pixel Myth is in the process of being expanded. It just takes time for the artist to make the packs.

I saw a recommendation to get Game Character Hub. Someone told me a while ago it was a scam that Ace has one included. A lot of people said something like it was going have more content but never did and became pretty useless. Not claiming that to be true facts just relaying what someone told me.

Would you see any bonus to Game Character Hub outside RPG Maker Aces version?

Game Character Hub comes with the resources from VX Ace. But it also has resources from XP. It allows you to create XP/VX/Ace characters, move things around (the built-in generator doesn't do that), edit things (built-in generator doesn't), and create XP tilesets (built-in generator doesn't). It's also very good at creating lots of different versions of characters automatically. There's more planned for it down the track.

Thanks I might consider supporting it then. I was hoping Ace was going have more down the road as well but I feel like the actual devs have just focused on XP and then their future unnamed version of RPG Maker.

I went ahead and updated this as people were trying to ask more the style of the game I'm working on. Even I'm not 100% sure you change ideas and strategies all the time starting out. But it's becoming a little more of a solid plan.

This is what I ended up buying:

Tiles:

RPG Maker: Arabian Nights Steam Store and Retail Key

RPG Maker: Royal Tiles Resource Pack

RPG Maker: Evil Castle Tiles Pack

RPG Maker: Dungeons and Volcanoes Tile Pack

RPG Maker: Halloween Tiles Resource Pack

Music:

RPG Maker: The Blackheart Power Music Pack

RPG Maker: Cinematic Soundtrack Music Pack

RPG Maker: The Nothing Battles Music Pack

RPG Maker: Survival Horror Music Pack Steam Store and Retail Key

RPG Maker: Gyrowolf's Music Resource Pack 001

RPG Maker: Magnificent Quest Music Pack

RPG Maker: Dungeon Music Pack

RPG Maker: Classic Fantasy Music Pack

RPG Maker: The Simple Life Music Pack

RPG Maker: Fantasy Adventure Mini Music Pack

Big question: Does ogg vs mp3 have any legal licencing issues I need to be worried about when using them? I know MP3 did at one time but I assume within RPG Maker I have no issues and I don't mean with RPG Maker company but the owners of MP3..

The biggest thing I like about the Game Character Generator is, once you have created a character, you can save the exact character layout.  This is incredibly helpful if you need or want to go back and change a few things, like the armor the character is wearing, because the layout will have everything you did.  I've had to do that for a game I wrote.  So you don't need to create the character from scratch again.

Also, for creating NPCs, you can rapidly create dozens of similar characters by asking the tool to vary, say the shirt, eye and hair color through permutations of each.  This can help populate your game world.

The only thing I wish it did was create the Faceset and character sprite at the same time from one template, but there are so many pieces I imagine that's almost impossible to coordinate the two.

Wow, that's a lot of resources! You are so ready to go! ^^

You would normally use .ogg files for RM due to the looping ability, but there is no problem if you intend to use the .mp3 or (god forbid) the .wav files.

The mp3 files are placed there basically for your listening pleasure. ^^

Game Character Hub is a nice program. I'd buy it if it wasn't on Steam.

I saw the wav files... That was soooo old school. I guess some the older RPG Makers?

I ended up buying the Game Character Hub also. I see it helps put tiles together. Not that I would end up using that but maybe.

On the contrary, wav files are the best to hang on to since the are a lossless format, just like PNG files are lossless graphic files format.

Wav files also contain the the original audio algorithm, which you wouldn't be able to retrieve from mp3 or ogg files.

To find out more about wav files, google the information up. ^^
