for me it's gotta be stardew valley, but harvest moon: animal parade comes in pretty darn close!

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town is probably my favourite.

Harvest Moon: Back to Nature/Friends of Mineral Town wins out on most memorable cast for me as it is for me and probably many others, THE Harvest Moon game, but the best farm/life sim game award should definitely go to Stardew Valley. It managed to perfectly emulate what Harvest Moon and Rune Factory offered mechanically and then expand on it way beyond either of the franchises have achieved. It's every HM fanboy/girl's dream fan game.

I'm gonna go a little off the board here and choose Maxis' SimFarm, which was a fun, challenging game that was actually about farming.

If you're looking for a rural life simulator, Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (PS1) was my favorite of its type.

Harvest Moon series (now Story of Seasons). My favorite is still Harvest Moon 64.

If we're going to go with the money here though, I think Farmville kicks all their arses. I dunno, how did Back to Nature and all its remakes do in lifetime sales?

The topic was about "what's the best game" not "what's the most profitable game", but you can get a partial answer to your question by visiting the SoS Wikipedia article. This article includes not only sales data for SoS/HM, but also mentions the peak active users for Farmville in its "Social Network games" section.

I remember sim farm! No matter how many fences you built the animals would always escape.

Stardew Valley, definitely. Personally for me, with all the mods out there for it, I don't think Harvest Moon comes close. (Not dissing on Harvest Moon though, it's a great game but I'm more like the type who likes customizing features in games to my own liking.)

Same, Stardew and Harvest Moon are my two go to games. There is some other ones worth checking out like Fantasy Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon and Innocent Lives: A Futuristic Harvest Moon.

Now for me, it really depends on what I'm looking for. After playing every single farming game under the sun this past year for research. I have to say HM Friends from Mineral Town did farming really, really well. But, it didn't have a sense of adventure or exploration like SV did. I also really liked the rune factory games, just wasn't a huge fan of the combat. Now, SV is a whole other ball game. The reason why I don't judge it along the older HM games is because when the good 'ol HM games came out on the 64 and Gameboy the idea of a farming sim was a relatively new idea, not to mention things such as console restraints and time limits. SV had tons of past reference games to look at and was developed firstly for the PC, where restraints are way less restricting. SV also had an infinite amount of time since it was an Indie Game and not set to an exact deadline from day 1. However, the mechanics in SV are close to perfect and executed in a great manor. My only real complaint about every game here is the small over world (I know why it's small but that doesn't mean I don't have to dislike it). Farming sims are my #1 favorite type of game.

Maxis SimFarm definitely. I learned how to win it by exploiting a bug.

Surround your barns with hay bales and lock the cattle/horses/pigs/sheep inside the barns with the bales. The livestock will always be prize winning fair animals and their price just keeps going up. Buy at about 200-400$ and sell them all at $2000+. Build more barns and repeat when the animals breed their way out of the barns. No crops; that's just a waste of money; those always go bad. All livestock and no crops. SimRanch for the win. I wish my dad's ranch was as lucrative.

Harvest Moon for the PS2. The one where you could date Lumina.

I haven't really played any farming games besides Stardew Valley... And a bunch of MMO's I guess.

I should give the Harvest Moon series a try some time.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
