What's the most recognized way of showing text as thinking instead of saying?

Rather than writing it book style like ending it with "X person thought." Thinking balloon over character sprite? Different color text? Enclosing the text in dashes?

I've moved this thread to General Discussion. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

I would say it's putting the text inside parenthesis.
(This is what the character is thinking.)

I don't really understand why this belongs here rather than the general MV forum, but ok.

I generally use the dim background when thinking... and the normal background for dialogue.

I've seen some visual novels use [] to indicate thoughts. Yanfly's message core allows you to show the text box over your character's head. That could work well too.

Because the question of how to make a dialogue look like a thought instead of a spoken line is something that applies to all RPG Maker engines, not MV specifically. But that is not important, the blue text is an auto-generated text, not a personal message.

Italics.

Anything that feels like a full internal thought (Picture it, Sicily, 1922...) has always gone into italics for me. I will occasionally spice it up in MV by putting it on a dim message in the middle of the screen. The only time I have ever not used italics in MV is when I'm using Yanfly's Gab plugin as that message at the top of the screen seems to fit completely with the idea of internal thoughts.

I use the "dim" option.

I think you can use most things; the key is consistency. You have to be absolutely consistent or it causes problems.

Personally...
- Dim background for narration
- Parenthesis for thought
- Italic for something cryptic like spell chanting
- I don't have a scenario for whispering yet, but probably I would use italic as well.

I use dim backgrounds for thoughts, but also characters whispering to each other or muttering under their breath.

[ should I comment on this I wonder ]
Well I think so....

Anyway, those are the two ways I tend to use as thought, the main thing is to stick to one way through out a single game though xD

Italics in word documents, parenthesis in RPG Maker.

Parenthesis are usually used in chat rooms for this so that's what I'm most attuned to.

Parenthesis mostly, window skins could be changed to your typical thought cloud bubble if able to differentiate as its easier to show than to tell.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
