So I've been thinking a lot about battle systems. Frontview, sideview, Zelda-style...There's a lot to choose from. I want to know what you guys like in a battle system. I'm not talking about skills and spells, we all know those have to be interesting for a battle system to be any good. But from a purely aesthetic perspective, what do you like? Do you love damage popups? Hate state animations? Do you like complicated skill animations or do you prefer the good ole FF "walk forward a bit and back up" method? Holder-style sprites? Kaduki? Field sprites? Do you have a favorite engine? An engine you absolutely can't stand? ATB or no? Is there one thing that's likely to make you go, "Damn, son. That's one spiffy-looking battle right there," or is it more of a combination?
Tell me all the things!
As for myself, I like sideview systems. Zelda-style is nice too, but I really prefer turn-based. I'm not fond of ATB, as I like to have plenty of time to strategize. I like damage popups and state animations, and I prefer engines that have character faces instead of just names. I'm partial to relatively simple animations for normal attacks and standard spells, but I love it when super-attacks go all out and get some super-fancy animation with screen dimming and all that jazz. I prefer field sprites or Kaduki sprites over Holder's battlers, and I really, really hate when games use the default battlers for a sideview system. They're made for frontview!
My favorite engine is Yanfly's. The popups are really lovely and informative, it's got the character faces, and all around I just think it's very attractive. Sadly, it doesn't play nice with Victor's Animated Battlers, which is my preferred sideview system. But yesterday, I found Yami's Battle Symphony. It's just as lovely as Victor's system, (though it's a little harder to use, I think), and perfectly compatible with Yanfly Battle Engine. I'm in love!
