With plugins and scripts you can have custom game screen sizes. I thought about making a game 1600 x 900, but would the HUD look unreadable on something like a Playstation Vita? What's your prefered screen resolution when playing an RPG Maker MV game?

1280 x 720, it's 720p resolution and fits 1600x900 quite well on full screen.

Thanks for your response. I discovered this topic was already talked about, I forgot to search for it:

I pretty much wanted to know what the average resolution preference was. I think I might try to deploy a game in 2 seperate resolutions, 1 for pc and 1 for phones. That way pc users can enjoy a larger resolution, and phone users wont have hard to read, HUD image (it would become unreadable if the resolution is too high, right?).

It's fine :v
Some phones uses 720p or 1080p and those has medium CPU, just be careful with the art, it's better to downgrade it to avoid memory issues.

I'm using 1152x648. It's the closest resolution to default while expanding it to 16x9 aspect ratio.

I've moved this thread to General Discussion (this is not discussion of a game mechanic). Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

Sorry, I'm confused. What's the difference between project development and game development? Since this is an RPG Maker site, projects means the game you're working on, so I would think that project development and game development are the same thing.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read "not discussion of a game mechanic", so if it's about your project, but it's not about a game mechanic it goes to general discussion, otherwise it goes to project discussion? Also, the post is about the plugins changing the screen resolution, isn't that a game mechanic?

A game mechanic is something you are going to make your players do.  Think of it as some kind of system, and you're trying to nut out how it should work, hold together, look from their perspective.  Whether to have on-map battles or encounters, how a crafting system should work, etc.  Also, it's for discussion of ideas about these things - what could/should be included and what are the implications.  When it comes to actually implementing it, that would go into the Support or Script/Plugin forum for the particular engine.  Game Mechanics Discussion is purely theoretical.

Your question is a general "what's your preference" type of thing.  It's got nothing to do with mechanics - how your game works under the covers, what the player gets to do.

There is no "Project Discussion" forum, so I'm not sure what you mean there.

Well I have a 1024*768 monitor so those resolutions are crazy big for me. I like it at 800*600. But I'm in the obvious minority.

Sorry, I meant "Project Development". Thanks, I understand the difference now.

It's not done yet, but so far I was planning on 1248x768. It's 13x8 aspect ratio. The reasoning behind it is:
1) I wanted something that was larger on this sides, felt less cramped than the 4x3 ratio.

2) I don't plan on deploying to mobile markets.

3) I wanted a resolution that exactly fits the 48x48 tiles of MV. This would be 26 tiles per 16. This will be my minimum map size.

4) According to this, such a resolution still allows me to reach over 90% of users. The ones I won't reach are possibly people who wouldn't be interested in RPG Maker games anyway.

1280x720.

I've tried lower, I've also tried 1920x1080, but 720p HD is where most resolutions are going to lay with, sad but doubt anyone's doing 4k UHD pixel-art games or at the very least scaling them 2x.

I could do 4K, but I wouldn't as the extra resolution isn't needed but 21:9 resolutions I am looking into as well.. getting a 21:9 monitor soon.

Well with a resolution too large your characters look tiny. I only changed my resolution for a UI.

That's why I kept mine close to default but just mostly added extra pixels on the sides to accommodate widescreen.

I decided to go with 1280x720. I want it to look good on Youtube, so I fit it in the standard size. I could have gone bigger, but some people have smaller monitors and it wouldn't fit on theirs. I feel this size works best for everyone, and it's still considered 'high quality'.

It's big enough to see everything pretty well, and small enough for it to be easy to draw for. So, I'm pretty happy with it.

Most of people doesn't have a device that can handle 1080p anyway.
On the other hand you'd need to make larger maps and maybe bigger character.

I only changed the screen ratio, not the resolution. Might be uncommon but I'm quite satisfied with the result.

The default window is really quite small, it doesn't feel like playing a game imo.

However I like the default resolution..

I to use 720p but there is a reason for this. I would go bigger, however rpg maker MV seems to have performance issues the bigger the resolution gets, like while moving characters on a map using the mouse. I found this to be especially prevalent while using 1080p and also still see minor lag with 720p. I wish this was not so as it was stated before we would be able to change the resolution which was misleading as I thought it was supported but it seems it was not optimized for such use to begin with.

On the other hand, I do understand as we are making pixel games and beyond 720p things do tend to be quite small anyways. So I would go with 1280x720 (720p) as it does work well on various other resolutions such as 1600x900 in fullscreen.

I used to be in 800 x 600 now 1040 x 480. I'm not used to working at high resolution because I worked on old systems and consoles for so long lolz. I'm considering 1280 x 720 as my current monitor supports it and everyone I know has a telly bigger than 13 or 20 inches lolz

Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
