Depends.

o What is the size of the map?

o How large is the interior space?

o What is the "tone" of your game? (playful or serious?)

o Are you using default 32x32 characters?

If you're doing a playful kidsy game with 32x32 characters and small maps, the little one is effective.

If you're trying for a more serious look, have larger characters, or have large maps, then I'd go with the bigger one.

Assuming you're using the default tileset, is it best to use the smaller houses/buildings, or the larger ones, irregardless of map size? The default house size used in the sample maps program were the smaller houses.

I never choose 1 tile high walls, even for the default chibi sprites. For me 1 tile is way too small. Houses are big. But there is still an alternative and that would be making the walls 2 tiles high. A lot of people prefer that. And if you go with more realistic proportions and bigger sprites, you can even make 7 tile high walls. Often houses have a second floor.

I just wonder how out-of-place taller houses look against the default chibi sprites and the default tree tiles. In most cases, 1 level houses that are two tiles high are taller or as tall as a tree tile, which is unrealistic. Trees irl are taller than houses.

If you're looking for realism in the proportions, start by getting rid of the chibi sprites :D

It's more a matter of consistency. As long as you don't mix styles, it'll work.

2 tiles up for the walls, and 2 tiles up for the roof for regular houses.

As Meillenin says 2 tiles for the walls and 2 for roofs - but I would say that that is the minimum.  In part it is because I always use 1.5 tile high doors, as I don't like seeing the head of the sprites higher than the top of the door when they are going into a building.

I think if you are going to have rtp trees near houses you can still do it if you don't slam them right up against the walls, which emphasizes the disproportion between them.

But ideally, don't use the rtp trees.

What I've been doing that seems to work for me (and my testers so far) is I use a 2:1 proportion. What I mean by that is the size of the house when  you see it outside is half the size of it's interior map, or, for every 1 tile the house has on the outside, it has 2 tiles on the inside. Seems to be working so far.

@ksjp17: Where do you suggest we get trees that are not RTP but don't clash with the RTP tiles? I've always had a problem finding those.

Candacis' suggestions are excellent.

If you are prepared to do a bit of work on hue and saturation in Gimp or Photoshop, there are some very nice ones on GrandmaDeb's 'Little Bits' blog.  She has gone to huge trouble to sort out the credits for what have often been referred to (incorrectly) as 'BebBen's trees'.  You can find them here if you scroll down a bit. https://grandmadebslittlebits.wordpress.com/2015/09/

Regarding houses... I am finding that the two tile wall and two tile roof to be suiting my needs at the moment. As others have said, if it is a kids type game and supposed to be cutesy, then the 1 by 1 house seems perfect. Other than that you can use a 2 by 2 style house and even add extra floors to it.

Keep in mind that if you add a second floor, then you will need to add a few shadows to the roof tile to the right to make it look proper.

The example I am trying to upload apparently isn't allowed... something to do with an extension not allowed in this community. I find this weird because I did it yesterday and had no problems :\

Hope that helps!

I choose left. 1 block for 1 floor. If there are 2 blocks for 1 floor, that because the wall is high, e.g for a bank, church, library.

New update for Battle Castle: Shadow from the Past A Shadow's Echo. No gameplay changes or new content, but lots of things got renamed, including the game title, for extra immersion. Some things related to sound too, like activating chests and taking things.

I put out a new pack and I swear, I did not realize how it looks like the ones on the right are scared/nervous of the one on the left until way after o_O I just wanted to showcase some of them randomly xD

Someone close to me straight up told me they didn't think my relationship with my girlfriend would last. No lead up, very bluntly. Like it's obvious or something. Trying not to let it get to my head, but it's hard.
The distraction would be a life saver.

My first foray into a plugin that I plan to release. Working on something for those who want to set up a Dragon Quest style battle HUD with minimal fuss. Includes the ability to round the battleback corners to fit your windowskin and, of course, front-view animations.
