Out of RPG Maker VX Ace and RPG Maker MV, just wondering what people preferences are.

I know it can depend on many other factors as well, but generally asking which of these two engines come into it.

MV hands down. VXAce has a really annoying dash bug that breaks games, at least on my system (running Windows 10). And it's nice to resize the window.

MV. Javascript is more powerful than RGSS, you can do more with MV than VXAce and you can even include completely outside scripts.

The game engine should have nothing to do with the quality and experience of playing a game.

Gamers should not be worrying about game engines, if a gamer is excited about a game engine and they're not going to be developing games for said game engine then I'm afraid they've just bought into the nonsense that marketing teams make up to tell people how great game tools are (and convince sheep to stay loyal to their game studio).

You can make an excellent game in VX Ace and you can make one in MV.

Here's the twist; if you're a game developer who knows these engines, then you're going to be able to judge the quality of the game's production quite well. But that's not judging the game's quality, that's judging the production quality.

I will forever be judgemental for anyone who makes a 2D RPG in Unity because they're subscribing themselves to months, maybe years of extra work to add features into Unity that already exist in the RPG Maker series. That's bad production values, from my point of view. But that does not effect the quality of the game, the game can still be an absolute masterpiece, regardless of the engine.

The OP is asking about playing games, not making them.

I've had no issues with Ace games and the ones I played were enjoyable because they were good stories, and made well. It had nothing to do with the engine they were made in. I haven't played any MV games, but I suspect it would be the same. I prefer to play games that have a good story and are well made, regardless of what engine they're made with.

@Shaz it's true that the story and quality are the most important, but given those things being equal (which I read as the point of the OP), I will always prefer to play a game made in MV for the reasons I listed. Being completely unable to use the dash button in a game without having to restart from my last save because it broke my controls, and having everything be really tiny because the window can't be resized, are major factors for me as a player.

Whoops, sorry :D
In that case I don't really care. However, it's not that vxace and mv are similar experiences. Generally the looks... I prefer MV to VXAce if we take general looks. Bigger and resizeable resolution certainly plays its role. But VXAce is more lightweight, which is also very important for computers like mine.

@xilefian Unity basic edition is free :p Sometimes an important factor in deciding between Unity and rpg maker.

MV mostly because I can F4 the window into full-screen mode. I find it mildly distracting to have my desktop and other running applications sitting there behind my game window. It's a fairly minor thing but if I'm going to pick one or the other, I'll take the one that can do full-screen.

As this does not involve the making of games but the playing of them, it doesn't belong here.

@Frogboy You can Alt+Enter with Ace to go into full screen mode, so functionally I don't see the difference. True, F4 on its own is one key, but as on my laptop I have to do Fn+F4 for MV, for me it's still 2 keys.

Honestly, I played game made by both engines, and I had no issue whatsoever. If anything, usually MV developers just don't bother to reduce the game size that it has the size bigger than VXAce, that I usually look a game tagged by VXAce first than MV.

Another small difference is about the window focus. MV, iirc keep updating even the window lost focus. VXAce doesn't. I usually don't focus playing the game itself. I play the game while chatting on discord with my friends. If I want to respond the chat, I just "pause" VXAce games by unfocusing the window. And this also the reason, I never fan of playing in full screen in any RM games.

But at the end of the day, I don't really care what engine the game is using. Let it be RMXP, RMVX, RMVXAce or RMMV, if it's good (and not too big) then I'd say it's good

MV has a higher RAM requirement but other than that, they're both great.

@Kes Sorry about that!

I've played games in both engines and don't really prefer one more than the other, I get less lag in VX Ace games but otherwise they're fine. That's my opinion but I know we all have different opinions so I've been curious as to what the most popular opinion of the two is.

And yeah with scripts Ace screen resolution can be resized to MV's default size.

Ace can do full screen.
Cool. Is there a keyboard shortcut or something for this? The games I played usually had a resize option but it just gave you a choice of 3-4 different sizes. I assumed that was all that was available especially since I couldn't maximize or manually resize the window. Or is this just an option for games that use a certain plugin?

I suspect it has to be added by the developer. I know with the Aveyond games the ability was added via script to switch between fullscreen and window via Alt+Enter. I'm not sure if there was a default way using any other keystrokes.

I don't care which one for playing, I used to love XP for simplicity for making but thats not the subject at matter. I like the larger tiles on MV which is what I use now but that can be achieved in any of the engines.

Nice.

Changed my vote to Both. If I can full-screen in VxAce now, I don't really have any preference.

Both are fine to me. I care more about the quality of the game itself.

A few things you would want to consider - MV allows for larger resolutions, so games made in it will likely have better resolutions than Ace games which are mostly limited to 640 x 480 resolution max. On the other hand, MV games can lag badly on some people's computers, particularly if those PCs are older and low end. For a 2D game engine, MV is rather demanding, so that's worth taking into account.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
