Hello,

I am looking for some help on what programs I need to start designing and if anyone has any videos or guides anywhere that could help me make an rpg. I plan to make the battle system LMBS, but I could not find any tutorial videos online. I have sprites I am going to use for the game that I made from Banned Story, a Maple Story (MMORPG) simulator, here is a video of the battle system in case you are not familiar with linear mobile battle systems. Please, any tips, or posting a guide would be helpful, I am looking for introductory assistance. Thanks!

If I need any more information please let me know as well.

I'm not sure if you're aware but the video is demonstrating a plugin for RPGMaker MV. You'd need to buy MV and then download the plugin (it's in the description of the video).

By the way, not sure if MS sprites would work with MV. They might be too big for the required size of battle sprites in MV. (and if you were going to make this game for public release then it's probably not a good idea to use copyrighted sprites like that anyways)

I've moved this thread to game mechanics. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

Considering the video you posted is a plugin for RPG Maker MV, you don't need much else, aside from buying MV.

RPG Maker MV and maybe an image editing software such as gimp or paint.net (I won't suggest photoshop since all you need is the ability to re-size images just in case).

This actually sounds more like a tutorial request than a discussion about mechanics design.  As such, it is still in the wrong place.

@eyydoe Would you please clarify:

  • Do you have any version of RPGMaker?  We need to know that because the answers will vary depending on the engine you are using.  VXAce uses Ruby script and MV uses Javascript.

Assuming you do not, which is what it sounds like, then you need to buy MV to get the battle system you want, and use the plugin showcased in the video.

You ask for videos and guides to help you make an RPG.  I suggest you start with Andar's compilation of information for new users. Spending some time with this, working through the tutorials (not just reading or watching them) will give you a solid foundation and save you a lot of time and frustration in the future.

Until you actually have MV, there is not a lot anyone can do to give you specific help, and then the place to post will be the forum for MV Support.

Okay, people already said this, but let's clarify:  This is a RPG Maker forum, so RPG Makers from 95 to MV is our suggestion.  LMBS has been made on RPG Maker 2003 and has appeared as a script as early as RPG Maker XP.   The scripter in that video has a VX Ace and MV version of the LMBS script, though I recalled that Tantenkai's Journey Battle System has a VX Ace version too.

---

First lesson:  Scripts are lines of code you can put in the script section of your RPG Maker (or in the script folder of MV).  XP to VX Ace use Rubyscript but are written differently to match the structure of their respective Makers, and MV uses Javascript which activates code differently than Rubyscript.

XP - RGSS

VX - RGSS2

VX Ace - RGSS3

Also, some scripters also create a "core script" that changes how RPG Maker works but more importantly makes it a requirement for some scripts to function.  You'll probably know if the script is programmed to tell you this.

---

The VX Ace and MV versions of the LMBS scripts are generally preferred because of the notetags concept, code that you can paste in the noteboxes of the database and customize just by changing a few numbers; in the older days, you'd be likely to write more code in the script section just to make one enemy walk at a different speed than the other.  Anyway, the script from the video should have notetag examples and where to paste them (Google Translate or similar if it's in Spanish or Japanese), and changing the numbers inside those notetags should give you an idea what gets changed.

That script should especially have a demo due all the sub-scripts involved (battle system, skill system, etc).  While you could play it as is, you would need the matching RPG Maker to open it up in the editor so you can see the scripts and where it is used.  If allowed (usually with script demos), you can copy and paste the contents to save yourself some time.

---

I haven't worked with the current LMBS scripts, so I don't have any specific advice except to check the demo.

@eyydoe If you do not provide the information that people ask for, then we cannot give you proper help.

As this is in the wrong place, and you haven't answered the questions, I will have to close this.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
