Game Synopsis:

This is the story of Jack the Hero! He's an adventurer with a heart for a brain and an ultra sense of justice. Jack travels across a wild land making lots of new friends, including a Lumberjack, an Archaeologist, a Saleswoman, and a Wyvern with attitude. When evil ghosts start haunting innocent civilians, it becomes Jack's duty - no, his privilege - to save all who are affected. Together, Jack and team search for the world's greatest macguffin, the Core Prime Element, whilst stumbling into many misadventures. Their journey may be sunshine and giggles, but little-by-little Jack and his friends begin to unfold the profound mysteries of their world...

Tone

I tried making Whimsy Heroes akin to a Saturday morning cartoon. It is...whimsical...humorous...and sincere!  Adult themes are limited and language is clean. Expect a greater focus on story, character development, and world-building as opposed to nuts-and-bolts game mechanics. Though I certainly tried to make the gameplay is engaging too. The purpose of the game is to just have a good time.

Characters

A total of 12 tubular heroes join your party through the game! A few key characters to highlight include:

Jack
"There are three rules to being a hero. One: No swear words. They are mad fuzz. Two: Always wear a cape. I think that one explains itself. Three: Treat every person you meet with love and kindness."

Viera
"This is another victory for SCIENCE!"

As an archaeologist, Viera's wit and intuition guides the party through the dirtiest dungeons and muddiest waters. Her skepticism is sometimes at odds with Jack's carefree whimsy, but the party becomes better from it. Her meddle is put to the test when they uncover miracles that even she cannot understand...

Scarlet

"Why should I level up when there are starving kids in Uganda who don't even have experience points!?"

Scarlet has a gift for quarrels and severity...but her heart is in the right place. She fancies herself a real 'Robin Hood', but it's hard to verify if she's ever successfully thwarted any evil capitalistic fat cats. While she may not believe in the spirit of a true RPG adventure, her strong personality becomes an effective weapon for Jack's party.

Game Mechanics

- Utilizes Yanfly's Turn-Based Battle System and accompanying Yanfly scripts.

- Collect Materia to learn new skills!

- Unique puzzles in each dungeon!

- Every boss battle has a unique "gimmick" to keep things fresh!

- 12 unique characters! Each have their own unique set of Passive Bonuses! The design intent was to make each character's stats and qualitative play style feel like their respective personality. (aka: Jack feels confident, Reynold feels sneaky, Gregor feels like a tree, etc.)

- A compelling plot that's not too ambitious, not too simple.

Battles are random encounters. But the player is given the option to disable encounters from the beginning of the game. If a battle has no intrinsic value, then there doesn't need to be a battle.

Maps:

Effort was put into making maps visually appealing and intuitive to navigate. Progression of maps are fairly linear, and are ultimately designed to compliment the story. Screen shots include:

Pretty Landscapes:

World maps akin to Super Mario Bros.:

Puzzles and other non-battle gameplay elements:

Every piece of equipment has a sarcastic description:

Hi,

A couple of badly named audio files. The first prevents the game starting on my english xp, the second causes the game to display an error message 'not found' before it exits.

Woops! It looks as though certain punctuation marks in the file names don't uncompress correctly in earlier versions of Windows (That's my best guess). I'll clean up the file names as soon as I can. Thanks for catching this!

This is going to be a really big review, so I'll give it categories to make it simpler.

Pros:

On Design:

-The occasional quizzes after boss battles were really funny and are a good way to shake things up for the player.

-The Super Mario World Map was interesting.(Not really sure why you have Jack's sprite always facing the front when he's walking though...)

-The idea to have the battle music be the same as the area music was another interesting choice. I'm glad you still had boss music though.

Writing:

-Some of the item descriptions were amusing.

-The level up quotes were funny.

-Mapping:

The locations were diverse for the most part.

Now for the more substantial part of the review...

Cons:

There are WAY too many playable characters. Plus they join way too quickly so the player doesn't really get to know a character before another one is introduced.

With so many characters, they start to lose their individuality in battles and there stops being a point to experimenting with different combinations.

Plus, the passives eliminate the only thing that makes the characters unique, the stats.

Every character can learn almost every skill and the exclusive skills are either variants of materia skills or just plain not worth using.

Speaking of which, you get Materia way too easily so it never felt earned.

The enemies go down way too easily, I felt no challenge whatsoever. One of the biggest reasons was that a lot of enemies were way too slow and had almost no elemental resistances.

If it sounds like I'm being harsh, It's because I see potential for a game here and I want it to come to fruition.

Great constructive criticism! These are very helpful comments, and let's me know there is still plenty of work to do.

Thanks for playing the game and taking these notes. I'll make sure to take this into account as I revise it.

Hi all,

After taking into account all of the great feedback I received from players, I have updated the game to a "Version 2.0". I have updated the Download Link at the top of the page.

Version 2.0 UPDATE (Dec 05 2014):

- Rebalanced battle mechanics to be more challenging and intuitive

   * Reduced number of skill trees to increase uniqueness of each skill

   * Lowered "order of magnitude" of stats to make stat gains more intuitive

   * Changed passive abilities to highlight idiosyncrasies of each playable character, instead of diluting them.

   * Removed monster 'pets'

   * Implemented stat buff/debuff system

   * Each boss battle has a unique "gimmick" to make each one feel different

   * All enemies have unique skills as opposed to simple skills like "Attack" and "Poison Attack"

- Polished dialogue and presentation

   * Includes more help dialogue to teach player game mechanics

   * Storytelling has been streamlined

   * All traces of profanity removed

- Added puzzle elements before major treasures to make them feel more rewarding

A copy of the download link is here: https://www.mediafire.com/?fb8p44abb01twj4

Balancing is very challenging  :) . It's still not perfect, but I think it's a step in the right direction. Hope you enjoy!

Hi,

First of all I want to say, this is not a review. Just a point of view from an average player.

This game has a lot of potential. Dialog is good, humor is good, grammar is good, maps are decent, and I wanted to enjoy it so much.

But!

It's not very well balanced (and I'm being kind here). My first peeve, upon leveling no gain to stats

(it doesn't even makes sense to grind). I mean, I'm level 13 now, but my stats about the same as they

were at level 3. Really!!! It's nice to gain stats with new weapons/armors, but I do expect at least 1 point gain upon leveling.

In my opinion the spread between levels is huge, at least this early in the game.

The random battles (most of them, not all) are extremely hard. As an average player, I do not want to

see "Game Over" after random encounter. Just because one person thought random encounters were too easy

(and I have no idea how easy they were), you went into completely opposite direction, and made them too difficult (and again, I'm just an average player, maybe for some people it's normal), but when I play a game, I want to enjoy the game, not be frustrated after each battle. I'm not saying they should be

attack/spam easy, but when during a random encounter monsters hit you for half of your HP and most of

my attacks miss, it makes me mad and frustrated.

I'm in the volcano now, and try to continue, but not sure I could finish the game, as it is now.

Sorry if I've been to harsh, and again it's just my opinion.

Just to prove my point, how unbalanced the game is. I was ready to quit, when I was in volcano. I came out of volcano, continued into the tower, and encounter became much

easier.

PS

The "Test of Speed" did it for me. Don't know how many people could be this quick.

Time to quit. Feel bad, because I started to enjoy the game, after the Volcano.

Hi Juliab,

Thanks for playing and providing feedback! No worries for sounding harsh, your feedback is very valuable to me. Sorry it was hard and frustrating at times. Frustrating games are the worst!

I'll plan on taking another look through the stat balances and making level ups more satisfying. As the lone designer I'm learning how hard it is to gauge what is 'easy', what is a 'good' challenge, and what is simply unfair. Especially since players are not given the same intimate knowledge of maps and mechanics that I have from creating the game.

Let me know if you have any other comments/criticisms! The last thing I want to do is make a frustrating experience for people. :D
