They're uber popular in Japan, I'd say they could be pretty popular in France but can't really say anywhere else.. :(

GIF (graphical interactive fiction) games have been around a long time. I've played quite a few on the apple 2 zx spectrum and in win 3.1 I'm showing my age here lol.
So it's not going anywhere...

I view them as highly popular. Popular enough that somebody made NDS homebrew to play them that has now been ported to more systems than I can count to the point that new games converted to the format aren't even compatible with the original player. Some really popular and high quality shows have been based on them (Clannad, Air, Kanon, F/SN, Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes, etc.) and each of those brings new fans to the genre as well, alongside that, fans of the genre are usually very avid. I find more fanfics for visual novels than with most other things of similar popularity in media, entirely because of their interactivity, so if you're worried about the popularity of visual novels, fear not, the market is massive. If you're looking for recommendations of some to read for inspiration or just because you're interested, shoot me pm.

Recently I just played Doki Doki as my first ever Visual Novel. It was an interesting first time through the genre.

I do!
And I'd say that, although a niche, it is growing bigger and bigger in the West since a few years ago.
And they're coming to the West for many reasons, one of them being that the market in Japan is growing thinner with the years :(

@MrZalgo Maybe that wasn't the best first VN to choose from. It plays with the codes of the moe-type games but if don't already know them, I can imagine a lot of questions marks above your head at some times.

They've been sleeper hits on steam. Titles that people thought were never going to get localized finally are over a decade later.

Big ones like Clannad are doing well in their own right.

They offer a more casual, story-driven experience, which many people seem to like. I think there's always going to be a market for that, so long as the game industry still exists.

I'm curious to see what kind of crazy things I'll be able to do with VN Maker once it's matured a little bit.

In my whole life, I've only read 3 VN. One of them is practically Hentai VN and 2 others are pretty famous (steins;gate and umineko no naku koro ni). I am not sure if Steins;Gate counts as VN though......

The only Visual Novel I've ever really "played" was H20: Footprints In The Sand, which had a great story and a "Blind Man" mode where you interacted with the ladies only via text and you couldn't see them (the main character is supposed to be blind for the story).

I do have Clannad on my Wishlist though. Some Visual Novels have interesting enough stories that I'd like to play them. But, it's kind of an acquired taste as the main draw of such games is going to be your story/characters.

I play VNs. :) I started playing them two years ago, when Amnesia: Memories was on sale. I also notice quite a lot of my friends on Steam play them, so there's definitely a market for it.

I've played several genres: otome, ecchi, fantasy, yuri, slice of life, mystery. I've played free ones, commercial ones, short ones, long ones, those made by indie developers and those made by big companies.

I'm definitely looking forward to what games VNM will produce. :)

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
