I began with RPG Maker 2000 and then shortly after XP. I then went to University to study Computer Games Programming. All I really learned in that time is that game making, or rather game making as part as a massive team where all you personally do is flick a few switches, is not for me. I wanted them to teach me how to use a program such as RPG Maker well. Instead I learned how to do a tiny aspect of an overwhelming system that would produce an awesome game at the end of it, but it wouldn't be mine.
RPG Maker cuts out a lot of the parts of game making - producing the engine, movement, database systems, etc, - that you would otherwise have to make and lets you get straight into using the engine and making the game content itself. And that's where I want to be, making the content. Sure, I can tweak the engine, and do an awful lot of scripting, but it's in addition to, not replacing, the game engine itself.
In short my ideal job would be making an RPG in RPG Maker. It's unfeasible, so I do other jobs and make games as a hobby.
