Nostalgia won't let me forget, and MV is sucking me in....

I started with the original RPG Maker 95, went to 2000, and 2003, and then went to Game Maker for years, I did buy Vx/Ace but wasn't able to handle what I wanted to do "a very fast paced Action-RPG"!  MV might actually be answering that call!

Two things make RPG Maker stands out when compare to other game engines.

1- Easy to make game, requires no programming knowledge to make an ok game. Everyone in here already mentioned that.

2- Jrpg element. The art resource pack looks similar to my favorite games; Chrono Trigger, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy...etc. those Super Nintendo games.

What I would like to see in the future RPGMaker.

- Physic

- Collision detection

- Able to make action games

- Networking

Full features of an actual game engines which serious game developers can rely on to make money without compromise the ease of making games. Although RPG MAKER is good but it has limit capabilities to make complex games. Most of RPG Maker games are rather simple like an 8-bit super nintendo games.

Well because every other program sucks at doing RPGs. The RPG maker always felt right in that.

Game maker does not have events, and it looks more like action oriented games, for example.

RPG maker just gave you the tools you need, tilemaps, events, battlers.

And it is one (if not the only) program that comes with an RTP, ready to use (even if you don't like)

I have good memories from RPG maker, my very first language was ruby

RPG Maker is probably the easiest game creation tool I've come across that still has a lot of versatility. I've tried using a number of programs over the years but RM has always stood out despite its negative aspects (low resolution and being Windows-only, mostly). For the games I like, this is the best option, and there's a lot of behind-the-scenes customization through scripting and creating one's own assets (or using DLC). Side note: the community has a lot of scripts and other resources - RPG Maker definitely benefits from its active (and helpful) community.

People do seem to hate on the RTP a lot but there's the option to replace all of it. And because the engine is newbie-friendly, it is a good introduction to game design for anyone interested in the field. If I taught an introductory game design class I would try to include at least one section on RPG Maker. The program itself boasts that it's "Simple Enough for a Child. Powerful Enough for a Developer." And that seems true, even with its faults.

The new MV version coming out is going to expand on a lot, judging from the little information we've seen so far, and help address many of the issues people do have with the RPG Maker series. It's versatile, but limited in many ways.

The positives certainly outweigh the negatives.

Primarily because of a few main things:

  • Art is expensive - I could spend $200 and get monsters and backgrounds, and that's a good deal in the game art world. But I'd still be lacking tilesets and character sprites.
  • Music is expensive
  • An RPG at it's base elements is a crazy complicated beast - I sat down one day and wrote down some of the things I would need to do it from scratch - inventory system, movement system, map processing, battle system - and these are just basics!
RPG Maker takes the above issues and wraps them in a neat little package, with the fancy bow being the surprisingly reasonable price tag. With multiplatform support incoming (the lack of which being the reason I was contemplating an RPG from scratch), it's everything I need in one place to make an RPG.

Now add in the community and the talented people that lend us all their art, music and programming talent, there's something pretty darn amazing in all of that.

Might tell my history in here, bad grammar alert.

I discovered RPG Maker back like in 2009 when i was a kid who was looking for a easy game making tool, the first RPG Maker i came into is RPG Maker XP, and when i tried it the interface looks amazing.and became addicted of it.

Following the release of RPG Maker VX i prefered the other program and once made a horrible game entirely using the RTP, and named the game "Earthbound VX" while infact every content in it isn't Earthbound related except the final boss is Giygas, who lives inside a volcano.

Remembering this amazing program i got a copy of it and made some RPG games with it, but none of them were released, until when i heard of VX Ace, this is where i really got into RPG Maker, as i made my first games that are shown to the public. SCSF's Nightmare and SiER were both games i used to work on until they were both cancelled for personal problems and lack of ideas.

RPG Maker is just better than Game Maker: Studio because it is really easy to make games with it. Game Maker: Studio is more a lotsa of scripting.

No Game Maker doesn't, but you write the events and they're objects!

They can do anything you program them to do through GML.  You can write any type of RPG with Game Maker if you have the patience and time.

Please do not derail this topic

This thread is about people's reasons for using RM.  It is not about what other engines can do, even if they do them extremely well.

I began with RPG Maker 2000 and then shortly after XP. I then went to University to study Computer Games Programming. All I really learned in that time is that game making, or rather game making as part as a massive team where all you personally do is flick a few switches, is not for me. I wanted them to teach me how to use a program such as RPG Maker well. Instead I learned how to do a tiny aspect of an overwhelming system that would produce an awesome game at the end of it, but it wouldn't be mine.

RPG Maker cuts out a lot of the parts of game making - producing the engine, movement, database systems, etc, - that you would otherwise have to make and lets you get straight into using the engine and making the game content itself. And that's where I want to be, making the content. Sure, I can tweak the engine, and do an awful lot of scripting, but it's in addition to, not replacing, the game engine itself.

In short my ideal job would be making an RPG in RPG Maker. It's unfeasible, so I do other jobs and make games as a hobby.

I like this tool because the immediate gratification factor.  It lends itself well to introducing students to concepts of programming without overwhelming them with a lot of code just to (for example) get a character moving around on the screen.  It is nice for rapid prototyping.

RPG Maker also has a nice community and decent documentation.  The content creators within your user base are actually your biggest asset.

It would be nice if the tool could be a little more generic in its concept of RPG.  JRPGs have specific tropes and having to work around when you don't want to make a JRPG is a time sink.

The tilesets and layers capabilities could be handled in much, much more intuitive ways.

I'm pretty pleased overall.

I've always wanted to get into the indie developing business and came cross RPG Maker one day. After playing the demo version I instantly got hooked and immediately got the full version. I saw its simplicity as a good way to start getting my feet wet, and its wide and almost limitless abilities is what continues to peak my interest especially with all the great scripts, and projects Ive seen. The great and helpful community also keeps me coming back for more and i've made some really great connections. Now with MV coming out I'm only looking forward to what else will be put forth on the table :)

I don't want to create wall of text again, so I'll do that quick:

- I like RPG Games.

- I love making/customizing things/games etc.

- It's easy to use or allows to go with more complex stuff.

- Allows to import and customize stuff. (My favorite xD - I'm comparing to the RPG Makers from consoles)

- Haven't tried another engines yet

- End of story -

Well I am very thankful for RPG Maker for many reasons :) My Aspergers Syndrome stops me from going out therefore I am unable to get a job outside of my house and RPG Maker and game creating are two things that I love to do :) So now I'm doing it! I'm using my favourite engine and I'm living the dream of creating my own game :) I have stuck by RPG Maker because at times I got really down about my health and that I couldn't live a normal life but guess what, I can live a normal life! I can be a game developer and I'm using one of the best engines of all time :)

One of my other reasons for sticking by RPG Maker is this very friendly, supportive and creative community that we have here :) Everyone on this forum is very kind, mature and helpful and honestly you all inspire me so much :) I am honoured to be surrounded by so many great people and I hope that we can all be great and share wonderful experiences here for many years to come! :)

I honestly couldn't want to be anywhere else except here :)

Love and hugs.

Matthew.

If you would give me some of your time, what made you stay with RPG Maker for all these years? What particular features and community-related activities do you like? Is there something more that you would like to see from us? Your feedback and support is valuable!
Very simple, RPG Maker is easy enough that it can be used by a total noob, but still has enough options to give you almost complete freedom over what you want to make if you have the skill and patience for it. The database and eventing system is very intuitive, easy to use and lacks the intimidation factor real scripting/programming has.

I've tried a few other game making programs in the past, but they didn't come close to the awesomeness and user-friendliness of RPG Maker.

Compared to some other people, I haven't been a part of the RPG Maker community for a long time yet, but so far it's been one of the best communities I know on the internet, especially this forum. There is a good amount of activity, questions get answered, advice is given, and it's all free from trolling and ****posting (which is way too common in many other internet communities I visit).

RPG Maker is a wonderful tool to get an idea out of your mind and see it work in real life. I think the engine really shines here because of how easy it lets you do that.

The best thing about it, I find, is that no matter how crazy my ideas for a game are, RM always let's me do them, and that's it, really. It adapts to you. As long as you know how to work your way around RM, nothing is impossible!

I formerly bought Ace, VX and XP to debug an old Game which I inherited from friends. I am still doing that but mainly I am using RPG Maker for internal presentations. Started a while ago when I was charged with a presentation about process management and zero time to come up with a proper introduction video. Afterards my boss and the whole team were so impressed about the little chars moving around the screen and explaining processes, that creating RPG Maker scenes became an ongoing job for me.

Until now I recorded the scenes with bandicam and included them in Power Point. But I have my hopes up that with MV I can create the entire presentation in MV alone ;-).

Why RPGM?

It took me in the world of game development.

I'm not an elder member here, I only used RMVXA, but it still helped me a lot in understanding the game developement techniques.

And it's also good because you don't need to know everything, but still can make a decent game.

For instance, I have no idea of how to make any kind of art from scratch (that requires more than 2 colors in it), but I discovered scripting.

And that's very good if you want to make a game on your own.

But, it's not, and I suppose it'll never be "powerful enough for a developer". Do not ever underestimate the powers of a developer.

NO game engine will be able to achieve such thing!

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
