~W A R N I N G~

- - - - - This might sound like a rant against you - - - - -

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Alright so I heard a lot of people complain and say TotT (Tales of the Tempest) for the DS is a bad game.

I recently got the 100% English Patch by AbsoluteZer0 and I played about 5 hours into the game and so far I don't see why people hate it. (BIG Tales Fan)

- A few things I saw a lot of people say -

1. The game is a joke, it makes basic Indie game creators look pro.  (seriously? I haven't seen a downloadable completed "fan tales game" yet for people to say that.)

2. The battle system is terrible. (Yes, it's a downgraded battle system compared to the Consoles, but I wouldn't say "TERRIBLE",  I am enjoying it so far.)

3. "For the record: do not play this game. Ever." -romhacking.net English Patch Thread.

(I'm already playing it, and I don't see what's so bad about the game. Maybe because I'm too big of a tales fan?)

4. The game was poorly designed. (How was it poorly designed? I don't see YOU making something better with a battle as good as that.)

5. The world is empty and too simple. (Lol? have you seen Tales of the Abyss's world?)

A comment from the person who did the entire english patch. (AbsoluteZer0)
"This game is a perfect case study in all the ways you can screw up during game development." (LOL WHAT!? I've seen WAAAAAAY worse.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- A few things I have to say about the game, that aren't a big problem -

- The battle system is confusing, and you can get trapped by enemies sometimes, but what do you expect from Namco when they try something new for a handheld.

 - The story is a bit cheesy and basic. SPOILER! from what I know so far.

You are a boy Caius who lives in a small village called Fern with your father.

Later that day an injured knight collapses at the entrance of the village.

You, your friend Rubia, your father and Rubia's father take the Knight into their home to try and aid him.

Later after You(Caius) are to watch over him for a while, he wakes up and tells you a message about giving a Stone called the Patiant to the Archduke in Janna.

After so, he passes away and monsters start to appear in town.

You leave the inner sanctum of the Church to go see what's going on, You encounter your first and second battles.

A while after this, your father comes to help you which shows your father turning into a Human Bear and takes out all the enemies.

After so, the village accuses Caius's father that he probably called all the monsters to the village just because he's a Lycanthe which is later explained

what a Lycanthe is by Caius's father, which he also tells him that he isn't his real father, but rather one who took care of him on behave of Caius's mother's request before she was executed.

The next day people known as the "Warrior Priests" show up to take Caius's father (Ramus) away because he is a Lycanthe.

One of the commanders, Rommy later kills Rubia's parents inside the Church and blames Ramus for their death because he is a Lycanthe.

They soon find out that Caius and Rubia were the ones who watched over the injured knight (which had the Stone) and now they want to find

Caius and Rubia.

Caius and Rubia are on a race of time to get to Janna before Caius's father is executed which they meet 2 people in the Black Forest.
Tilkis, a Prince and Forest, Tilkis's bodyguard, which they join your party to help you through the Black Forest.

Later you all arrive in Janna only to find out through rumors that your father was executed without even having a trial. (He could still be alive.)

Forest later get captured and you meet another Priestess by the name Arria who joins your party and leads you to a Sewers where you can sneak into the

cathedral to rescue Forest.

This is as far as I been.
- The world so far is pretty simple on where to go, not that big of a problem, but you have too many "Surprise Back Attack Encounters".

- You can't tell a party member to use a certain Arte during battles.

- You can't change your artes during battles.

Other than that

I want to know "WHY" people hate the game so much, I personally don't have any problems at the moment.

I see so many people say they hate it, don't play it, and that the game sucks, but they NEVER explain "why" they're those things.

DON'T GET ME STARTED.

OH BOY WHERE DO I BEGIN?

OH MANNNNNN.

The game is a joke, and major props to the guys who struggled to make a full english patch of the game (AS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE EVEN), because the inside game coding is whack. I've not played too much of Tempest, but it really isn't a strong game when you think about the games that came before it (Destiny for example). I didn't like the battle system, because it was similar to the "3-planes" thing seen in Rebirth (though that game is still one of my favourites).

Caius and Rubia are the only characters from that game to be featured outside of it (Radiant Mythology games for example). Heck, the game did so badly, Namco delegated it from a Mothership title (main entry) to an Escort title (spinoff).

I'm a HUGE Tales fan as well, but even I know when a Tales game has done badly.

McTricky.....

You just provided a sample of what Lankaino meant by "I see so many people say they hate it, don't play it, and that the game sucks, but they NEVER explain "why" they're those things."

Please explain in detail. or BETTER detail, to maybe those who aren't possibly tales fans.

I myself honestly didn't know AbsoluteZero did a trasnlation, so I should give it a play myself today. I'm only a mild tales fan (phantasia, symphonia, innocence) so i'll play Tempest and report later today my thoughts.

I still don't understand why you and other people say it was done "badly".

It's a handheld DS game, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Tempest was the first DS Tales game that came out a year before Innocence which later followed by Hearts

(which I'm waiting for the English Translation.)

I honestly didn't like Hearts for two reasons.

1) The main character looks like Jaiden Yuki from YuGiOh! GX, and he even has a duel disk thing on his arm.

2) The battle system is kinda spammy, block a bunch of times to build up your meter and then spam them same skill or two over and again, then back to blocking.

I didn't get far though, but it kinda turned me off.

The characters are really uninteresting to me, the HUDS are really cluttered or messy. I'm not a fan of its soundtrack and most of the time it sounds very whiny.

Yes, Tempest was the first DS title. Not that it means anything. To me Tempest is many steps backwards.

Hearts is one of my favourites but I can see why the spammy nature of it may turn you off. In Hearts R (the Vita version) this is revised. It's less spammy, characters have TP and an AC counter (a-la Tales of Xillia). There's a bunch of new battle features as well.

This is all fine and dandy but it's your opinion. You should take it into considerate that just like you, other people can voice their opinion too. You can't and shouldn't bash them just because their opinions are different and they don't agree with you.

No one has to agree with you nor do you have to agree with them. Also their opinions aren't wrong and nor is yours, in your opinion you justify your thoughts on TOtT by your experience with the game. They too can justify their opinions as well by their own experience and can voice their own opinions just like you. So you shouldn't be ranting at all. You just need to grow up and accept that not everyone likes the things you like, that's normal.

I hope you don't feel offended, I'm NOT trying to offend you, I just think it's childish to complain about how others feel about something, it's even worse when you make a scene on a Forum about all in the hopes that people here may agree with you so you'll feel good. But hey that's just my opinion, I don't expect you to agree.

Yeah, I saw people say they hate how the menu is.

Honestly though, I have no problems with it other than "Shops" how I have to go back and click "Details" just to see what the item does or something.

Other than that, I have no problems with the menu, although I do wish I could make Rubia/or another member use a certain arte during battles, but it's still alright.

As for the major complaint about people saying the game's coding is whack.

(Why do you care how the "coding" is done? You're not editing the game, you're playing it.)

I don't really get offended by people when they say something about me online since it's just the internet, that will only affect me if someone said it in person, so I don't mind it.

However, I know this is childish and normally I don't about about people's opinions, however.

About 80~90% of everyone says they hate it without real reasons, or minor reasons, which makes me curious on why.

I also don't think I'm trying to start a scene on purpose, I'm just curious.

@The Dragon God: I don't feel like the OP was complaining; rather, he sounds like he is questioning the source of all the bad vibes from the game. He doesn't sound childish to me either. He presented each argument in an orderly fashion and also presented his rebuttal against it. That is quite fair in my eyes, and now he's asking for our opinions. I actually think you took this too far and are looking slightly childish yourself...

@Lankaino: I actually found this thread on gamefaqs about it here. Perhaps that'll satisfy your questions? :)

From what I've read, it sounds like the typical indie RPG. Less than 40 hours long, and here's a quote I personally took to heart:

Actually, the game would only be about 3-4 hours, but you spend roughly a half an hour between each town/event/dungeon because the world map is so large and you run into so many enemies.
That is a big no-no for me. If I am spammed with enemies just going from point A to B on -one- map, that isn't really fun; it becomes quite rote and boring.
This makes me want to play it just to be able to be certain of these comments.

In that gamefaqs thread, I agree with the AI, sometimes my party members will run back to the other side of the map and leave me trapped between 2 or 3 enemies for at least 5 or 6 seconds before they come back to help.

But I did find my own way around this as it requires you to think smartly and move around the map quickly which actually keeps me on my toes.

As for the Point A to Point B, so far it's actually been like that, but I think the main fun thing about the Tales games are the battles, at least for me anyways.

I don't mind spending an hour grinding a few levels before moving to a harder area.

I actually don't run into a lot of enemies on the world map, the encounter rate is pretty low, at least at the moment, even if they were high encounter rates, I enjoy them because in a Tales game you shouldn't miss a single EXP gain.

- - - Off-Topic - - -

I've actually grinded throughout Tales of Symphonia and got at least Lloyd, Colette, Raine, and Kratos to Lv.250 before beating the game (on second play through with only 2x EXP Rate)

You say your curious yet the very first words you write in your OP is a WARNING and that you state it's possibly a Rant thus by doing so you yourself realize openly that some people will see this as a Rant. Thus with that said, a Rant is a expression of one venting out their anger. Curiusity isn't anger, they are two different feelings of emotion. This then justifies my opinion that your being childish and thus are seeking attention to what your pointing out which point blank is your opinion and your hoping someone will agree with your logic.

Also you say you don't care yet you "felt " the need to reply to me and thus proceed to explain yourself. In doing so, you openly show it matters to you. Actions speak louder then words my curious friend. ^^

Well that's your opinion and I'm fine wuith that but just know a opinion isn't true until proven with facts. Second I never said if I was being childish or not BUT I did clarify that what I've said was just a opinion and I don't expect him to accept it.Besides he never said he was loking for a source and your partially correct he was aking the opinions of our Community but that doesn't mean he wasn't hoping to find allies to support him.

I already understand you were saying the Rant was towards the naysayers who played the game hence why my very first post addresses your opinion TOWARDS other people's opinions of the game, Plus I read your OP, that furthered enforced my thought that you were addressing people. I took your Warning as you wanted it and thus proceed to voice my opinion.

Just for the record, I don't play too much of a 'Tales of' person, but I do know about how this game (and games like this) get putted down for now real reason, or for wrong reasons... or even for non-existent reasons, neither really makes any sense and almost seems like they are just calling a game a bad game just to call it a bad game.

Not to say the Vice-Versa isn't true either, there are just as many games praised without any reason why, not saying they WEREN'T bad games, and I'm not judging there opinions, the problem is they won't say WHY.

A lot of you guys are focusing on the WHAT part of the statement. We know the WHAT, what he wants to know is WHY.

That being said, you make me want to play this game now, I guess It won't kill to play a translation for a couple hours, even if I do find it terrible, they I can give a better comment.

Good lord why all the quotes people. I can hardly read the topic.

and when they sad Bad Game what were the comparing it to? Also if you enjoyed the game then why care if they say it's bad? Maybe they just had different expectations.

Play a game for what you take out of it and how YOU like it. If someone else doesn't like it, I hope they find a better game. These are not the droids they were looking for.

I beg you don't try and bring that sort of nonsense here.

That's like someone who doesn't compose music saying they don't like a particular piece, and then someone else saying: "WELL WHY DON'T YOU DO BETTER?!?!!1!!!".
