Just going to throw up a small update. Makio spent the evening working on some busts for the game. Here are the parents of the protagonists.

Every NPC in the game will have a bust like these. The important characters will have emotions as well.

It's been a while, so I think it's time for another update. This game was briefly on hold while we worked on our Halloween contest entry, but it's back in full swing again. Heck, I stilled worked on it when I should have been working on the contest entry, haha, whoops. So here is some of what we've been up to, in no particular order.

I've been hard at work filling in the database. The skeleton for items/equipment is complete, and now it is just a matter of flavour text and balancing, as well as any additional non-useable items that will be added as needed.

Making a game where the core element centers around item collection and use creates a very large database for a relatively short game. Arrows, however, really take the cake. Because the game limits how many items you can take into battle, Gretel running out of arrows mid-boss was a concern. The solution to this is the ability to bundle your arrows in groups of up to five of the same type. You can unbundle these in the middle of battle to restock your in-battle arrow supply. These bundles are also used with her best attack skill, and the amount of arrows in the bundle affects the damage of the skill as well as the size of the area of effect.

But I'm sure you're more interest in pictures than words. Progress is being made on the maps. One by one, they're slowly getting done. Here's two of the recently completed town maps:

Maki has also been working on enemy battlers. Hope you don't mind beating up these adorable darlings!

I've also added mouse support and an easy difficulty which will increase item drops/finds and exp while lowering enemy stats slightly.

I think that's about it for now, except I suppose I should announce we're no longer planning on releasing a demo before we finish the game. The demo was already planned to be about 30-40% of the game, so we're just going to hold off and release the finished product instead.

Those battlers shall RUE the day they crossed paths with me while I'm using Gretel to poke bishes with her bow and pointy pines!

Finally took the time to nail down this design~ And--then shoved my pretty snow bees all over the place because I'm on 2 hours of sleep and think they are cute and needed to be everywhere.

The Snow Queen!

Lots of exciting progress happening on this game even though we've been pretty quiet in the project thread!

I saw this streamed live and was very happy to see so much effort being put into the game.  The busts and battlers look fantastic.  The game's style lends itself very well to the DS resource set.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

the snow queen is one of my very favourite fairy tales, so I'm ridic excited to play this game. crafting-heavy games aren't usually my thing, but it looks like you've put a ton of effort into making crafting kind of crucial to battles, and also pretty interesting! so I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out in-game. also I think it's super cool that you're including hansel and gretel! are any other fairy tale characters going to make an appearance?

@palladinthug: Ah, I'm glad to hear you were able to catch the stream. Even I wasn't around for it haha Thanks! I'm really happy that the effort is showing. The DS resource set was love at first sight for me because I knew it was something I could match.

@vociferosity: It's a favourite of mine as well! I look forward to hearing what fans of the original think of our adaptation. I'm working pretty closely with the source material to derive the story, but there are certainly things that aren't going to happen the way! :>

The crafting system is indeed very integrated into the battle system and other aspects of the game. We're taking great lengths to make it something that is accessible to people who do not frequent those sorts of games though. Also, although it would be very difficult, battling without doing any crafting is possible. (certainly not recommended though)

Hansel and Gretel and the Snow Queen are the only fairy tales touched on in the game. The Snow Queen is the work the story is mainly derived from, though Hansel and Gretel's story is touched on along side it. Their character development is hinged on aspects of their story. Other characters from these two stories make appearances, and I am a fan of dropping references, so I'm sure there will be reason to keep an eye out for Easter eggs connected to other fairy tales. :>

Thanks for the comments!

Damn it!  I freakin love Gretel!  You guys made her too awesome.  Is it possible to marry game characters?  Cuz I totally would.

@djDark: Well, if you go by what Maki says, she'll say it's perfectly all right. You might have to take it up with Gretel though.

Today we have a video for you. For a change, it even has sound! This is what you'll see the first time you open the game as well as if you sit on the title screen for a bit. You can skip it with any button press.

The title screen graphic is just a placeholder we threw in the game a long time ago, and we just used Gerda's theme for the title music for now.

Sweet!  Excuse me while I go put on my best vestments, shave and prepare my little book of pick-up lines...no wait, that's for the "other girls" I meet.  No, no.  I must woo Gretel somehow...UM!  WAIT!  No, I said nothing! @_@

AHEM...anyway.  Nice video!  Already liking the backstory and the game title art is cute, yet awesome.  Keep up the great work ladies!

The back story is based on the book, just like most everything else. : ) And the current title screen is just something that was drawn before we even started developing the game in the engine. It won't be staying. We just haven't decided what we want for the title screen yet. I have this strange feeling it will happen once we have a song for it, haha.

Love the video. It's got the perfect story-book feel, while at the same time staying true to your art aesthetic/style.

Major props to you both! :)

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
