X-Noir is the story of Eddie Humphrey, once an up-and-coming City Councilor but now an alcoholic has-been making a living as a private investigator. The game is a unique combination of logic-based investigations, action RPG gameplay, black humor and science-fiction. Hardly a typical film noir hero, Eddie is beset by severe anxiety, depression and low self-esteem as he balances his work with visits to the therapist and the concerns of his circle of friends. When a mysterious drug called "Chemical X" begins to play a recurring role in his investigations, Eddie realizes he is being drawn back into the twisty world of city politics whether he likes it or not. Along the way, he may also unravel the biggest mystery of all - himself.

Story and Concept: Volrath and ArtBane
Script: Volrath
Design and Puzzles: ArtBane
Coding: Fomar0153
(An extended list of credits is displayed in the game)

Major Characters

Eddie_Face.png

Eddie Humphrey: A man without hope for the future, drinking his way through each day and often teetering dangerously close to suicide. Eddie once had a promising future - he has a law degree and was elected to the City Council on the Defender ticket. However, his willingness to compromise with the other party irritated his peers and gave openings to his rivals and he was ultimately defeated after a bitter re-election campaign. Overwhelmed with shame and abandoned by his fiance, Eddie's inner demons took control. Sounds like a downer, but Eddie prefers jokes and zingers to self-pity and is usually quite personable.

Munoz_face.png

Alejandro "Alex" Munoz: A police officer who became Eddie's loyal friend after a City Council investigation saved his career. The two of them frequently throw back beer and liquor at Bubba's Bar and Grill. Given the similarities in their careers, they frequently help one another with investigations. However, Munoz will find his loyalty to Eddie tested by a police force that mostly holds a grudge for Eddie's actions on the council.

Michaelsen_face.png

Noel Michaelsen: Head of the Defender Party and the council's current Minority Leader. As election season looms, Noel begins to fear that the Advocates will go to nefarious lengths to ensure a victory at the polls. Despite being in the same party, he and Eddie clashed often as councilors and while they still don't see eye to eye on many issues, Noel has been a friend and mentor.

Katharine_face.png

Katharine Lynch: Eddie's agoraphobic neighbor hasn't left her apartment in at least a decade. She has made peace with this arrangement and stays informed on the outside world with newspapers and the internet. Her photographic memory has led to many pivotal clues for Eddie's investigations and he sees her as a valuable resource.

Duncan_face.png

Duncan Preston: A recent college graduate who is climbing the ladder in the local scientific community, Duncan's life was forever changed by a key vote Eddie made while he was still in high school. Now he helps the detective by providing scientific analysis and techincal expertise to Eddie's investigations. Quick with a joke and filled with genuine enthusiasm for all things science.

Welles_face.png

Harry Welles: The head of the Advocate Party and the current Chairman of the City Council. Welles's record on the council is the stuff of local legend, but he is out for blood during election season. Eddie holds Welles responsible for his electoral defeat and can barely contain his contempt. His day job is operating a pharmacy in the city.

Dr.Stanwyck_face.png

Dr. Lana Stanwyck: Real men don't see therapists, right? Wrong. At Katherine's suggestion, Eddie goes into her office without really knowing what to expect. She is very gifted at her job, but he will make a very challenging patient.
Screenshots and Gameplay Details
Noir01a.png
Most locations in the city are available to the player right as the game begins...but the bar is typically Eddie's destination of choice.

Noir02.png

Eddie examines an important clue in an early case. Players will have to use intuition and common sense to identify important items.

Noir03.png

Eddie during an interrogation...most of the shady people he deals with will hide their lies a little better than Diamond. The player determines whether certain statements are trustworthy or not. Also, notice the anxiety meter on the right side of the screen. Eddie is highly neurotic about his performance on the job and too many screwups will raise the meter, which could compromise the investigation and also have an impact on which ending the player ultimately sees (once the whole game is completed, of course).

Noir06.png

Fans of Master of the Wind who were awed by ArtBane's puzzles won't be disappointed with X-Noir. In this case, Eddie must lay out a path for an important crate (makes sense in context). This is just one of several obstacles awaiting players.

Noir05a.png

Fighting in X-Noir is done on the map, thanks to a system crafted by Fomar0153. Players have to line up with enemies and make them eat lead while avoiding getting attacked themselves. The HUD helps keep track of Eddie's health and ammo, while individual life bars appear over enemy heads.

Noir04.png

And who is this dashing fellow? Why it's none other than The Baron, making a guest appearance in an arcade game Eddie can play at the local movie theater. Brush up on combat skills while revisiting one of Master of the Wind's most beloved characters!

Hope you guys enjoy and we look very forward to your feedback!

Have you been playing L.A. Noire? Well I downloaded this and will be testing it today if I have the time. I'll post a short review then.

ArtBane and I first brainstormed on this idea about 3 or 4 years ago, but we were still working on Master of the Wind at that time. In the meantime, LA Noire came out and we both played it with great interest. There's probably evidence of its influence in the game.

  • Custom faces from Ronove

Just got to the end of the demo version. Seriously guys, the game is gold. I want to volunteer to do a let's play for when the final version comes out (even though I've never done one before). Great story, great setting, cool combat, and some nice puzzles. Really loved that slum mission especially. I am guessing the final version will be longer and will tie all the loose ends.

As for any bugs and stuff that I came across, apart from the whole being able to shoot through the wall that I mentioned before, just a couple of things in the factory level:

I think it'd be better if this dead guy's sprite was upside down and with either one or both of his arms being stretched forwards (and same for any other dead sprites). Otherwise it looks like he is standing.

X-Noir feedback1.png

And also, in this area here, we came from the right-hand door, but if we re-enter it, we end up in some other place and not where we initially entered from.

X-Noir feedback2.png

Also if I remember right, a couple of other things:

- The chairs in the prologue level were passable. Though I am guessing all chairs in the game seem to be so, it just didn't look quite right when I could see enemies walking all over the chairs.

- Sometimes when I would get hit, in particular I remember that being the case with the factory level boss, instead of my character continuing to auto-aim towards the enemy, he will just start aiming in the same direction he is walking, which made shooting at the boss kind of hard (and I can tell this wasn't the intent in the design).

Great game otherwise. Looking forward to the final version.

X-Noir Case 4 is now available for download! There have been several changes to the game since the last release - including new art and music.

Case 4 features a new zone - Snake Island. Artie also tags along with Eddie for this case, adding a whole new character dynamic. New enemies, puzzles, interrogations and more. Please be sure to leave feedback!

That's a nice game you've made here!

I love PI stories, yours is no exception ;)

OK, time for bug reports:

 - I had one bug when I entered the gun shop in the city mall. I looked at weapons, then ammo and... crash.

However, I couldn't replicate even by redoing my last actions. Tough luck I guess.

 - There's one bug actually that I can replicate: When I received the phone call by Keith Underwood. I just have a fadein on some place and an error message:
Unable to find
Audio/BGM/Hotel Noir

I've gone through by creating a sound file with that name, but that's something to fix in an update.

And now I'm back to your game!

I've started on Case 4, but I'm already stuck early on in it with that cipher code. I do understand (I think) how the code works in the example, but when I try to apply it to the word on the board, then it doesn't seem to give a coherent word. I tried all sorts of combinations, flipping stuff forwards and backwards, but not getting anywhere. Been trying to decipher it for ages now. Maybe another clue somewhere would've been helpful.

It is a made-up word. You were onto something when you flipped it backwards.

If you're still having trouble the word is

Got through the demo, I love it!
Now I'd have to wait for the next case.

A quick feedback:

Case 3: In the mansion of the family living in Birchwood, second floor, I can walk over the toy chest. Not a big deal but I was surprised.

Case 4: Well, after case 3, the objectives are no longer updated. It still tells me to Search for the missing persons in the slums.

One funny thing: during the lab break, the second password, I thought it was STREAM but had to look for another word before finding the right one.

The logic game with the chemicals was fun!

Glad you enjoyed it! The wait for the next case shouldn't be nearly as long. I'll look into addressing those issues for the next release.

Heya again. So I've gotten to the end of Case 4 and once again brilliant work. Love how the plot unravels itself gradually and everything starts falling into place, and Artie is a funny sidekick to have. Also I'll second what Cabfe said that the chemicals puzzle was really well done. The only thing I wasn't fond of is from my post above. I think the cipher puzzle is a bit hard and I probably wouldn't have figured it out if you hadn't told me the answer.

I notice in the answer every single letter simply went up by 1 and then the word got flipped backwards, but in the example with 'Hal Hood' it had the pattern of +5+1-3 and -3+1+1+5, so I kept trying to apply that in various forms, which is a bit misleading I think, not to mention that the answer is a made up word completely, so the player isn't likely to get it right unless they just trial and error everything. Just my two cents really.

Regarding that puzzle, if I can make a suggestion:

Maybe change the example with a unique word like "doodle" (or whatever) so it can still have the two same letters for reference AND give a clue about how to read it?
I found the code rather quickly because I like that kind of puzzle, but I understand that having it in two words in the example and one word in the puzzle might be confusing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll revisit that puzzle in the next version and try to make it a little more intuitive.

Huh... I just got to the beginning of Case 2, and it gives me an "Unable to find file Audio/BGM/HotelNoir" error.

It happens when the main character goes to sleep, after eating lasagna at his neighbour's.

(I like the game, though! It's probably the first action battle system for RM that I actually find fun.

It somehow streches disbelief that the main characters just goes and exterminates dozens of people for an "investigation" during the prologue but hey, a game needs to be fun. :p )

i got some amusement out of occasional dialog but this was a dragged out experience.

i did like the battle system tho.

i would not recommenced this.

Random Thoughts

-Hat shop owner does not sell you anything. he just says hats make the man. this room is pointless.

-slums objective doesn't update

-That cipher puzzle was annoying.

-the scene where you find Hal in the basement replays every time you go there

-gave up trying to guess the 6 digit pass to enter the facility.
