A silly game made in 2K3 by three people who have never used 2K3.

STORY

Fermat and Victor, find themselves summoned to a sealed church in the woods with their memories a jumble. As their memories slowly fall back into place they realize that they are in fact heroes who have been called to vanquish an evil Demon Overlord who is close to breaking free from the seal holding him in the depths of his castle. However, everything is not as it seems, and our heroes find themselves fighting an even bigger foe - their own conscious - as they press forward hoping to do what they think is the right thing.

WORLD

Every couple hundred years, the world is forced to repeat the battle between heroes and demons. Both sides have suffered casualties each time, leaving the earth scarred and muddied with the bones of those who have fallen. Mind you, really none of that gets mentioned much in game. Like all good games, this is just flavour text. ;D It's hinted at though! So it totally counts.

CHARACTERS

Fermat: A grumpy, socially awkward Necromancer who doesn't exactly fit well into the typical idea of a "hero." With his dark arts, he is capable of dishing out quick, AOE spells and reversing the injuries inflicted by attacks.

Victor: Lighthearted and often laughing, Victor is more easily associated with a giant, fluffy puppy than he is with being a hero. Though his wit is dull, his sword is sharp and his affliction with fire makes him capable of dealing strong physical attacks.

At the start of the game, you will be given the option of who you'd like to play as! It only changes who you see on the map, who interacts with the environment when investigating things for the most part, and allows you see the story from a different perspective..

GAMEPLAY

Not the highlight of this game. It's a default battle system, your level and equipment are locked. You'll have some fun spells to toy with! And while battles are never threatening, you have a few options to decide how you'd like to best dish out damage. Fermat and Victor are the only party members throughout the game, so while they have a lot of skills right off the bat, you are given plenty of time to decide which you like best. There are a few battles where I tried to do something different, but it's still nothing ground breaking. ;D

Explore your surroundings to find items and listen to the characters ramble about whatever they are standing in front of. That's the best part of the gameplay ;D I tried to put enough silly dialogue hidden among things to make it interesting. (I burned out by the final dungeon and there isn't any there, but there's also less decoration there then in the earlier part of the game so MEH it's golden)

DISCLAIMER

This is a short game that was made to feed a desire to game dev on my days off last week. It was supposed to take only three days to make, and honestly for the most part, the story and art were done in those first three days. You can't event a game in one day though... So a week later, I'm proud to say this game is complete! Using 2K3 presented a lot of challenges to us, especially since we were unfamiliar with it, but I wanted to make good use of my winnings and do SOMETHING with the program. Combat isn't the focus of this game, and for the most part, the battles are very easy and there's very little threat of death. The only true mechanic the game has is managing your MP, and even that is not that big a deal since both characters have MP Regen on at all times. This game is for the story; which is silly, but still something I think is enjoyable. :)

Last's night adventure with 2K3's reflect glitch aside, I had a lot of fun making this game! It satisfied the itch it needed to. I hope it can bring some enjoyment! If you find any errors, typos, etc please let me know!

I have a couple of questions for anyone who has played, if you don't mind taking the time to answer them. Obviously, keep the answers in a spoiler box, for these are spoiler questions xD

1. Which character's side of the story did you play?2. When did you realize the character you picked was actually not a hero, but a demon?

3. When did you realize that the other character was also a demon?
I'm curious how obvious that ended up being - which is a hard thing to judge as the person who wrote it ;D

Thanks for reading. :)

Here's a list of odd things I know are strange.

* In the Dirt Zone, they are talking about finding a key before knowing they are looking for a key. A bit strange. I know...* Cindy seems broken in her fight. Her mechanics seem to make her stop doing anything after a few turns. But honestly, that fight won't last long so you probably won't notice

* Yay! It sometimes crashes loading the second last fight. But you know. Only sometimes

Oh, I didn't even realize that the topic was approved already.

Yup, this is the game Indrah was streaming some mapping for on live stream last week.

A heads up that I don't understand - sometimes the game apparently crashes while loading the second last battle. I will try to replicate this and snag a screenshot of the error message to see if I can get help with that. Please, save often! I'm really sorry. It looks very similar to the error that I was getting last night with reflect, so that has me a bit worried.

awwwww this was a great game. Short game...  ;-;

That scene right before starting the seal breaking segment and the ending... I was cheering, honestly.

Also... Feral Doormat Fermat has eyeshadow as an equip? This is great.

I agree with Indra, bring on the seals.

Ohhh Indrah, it had your seal of approval before it was even done haha But thanks :>

And Mirpono! Thanks for playing! I'm really glad you enjoyed the game. I just HAD to put Fermat's eyeshadow somewhere in the game, his equipment felt like the best place ;D (he's very fond of his carefully applied eyeshadow)

I was cheering for them there too as they took the wheel and practically wrote themselves. o3o~*

The characters are creative! :D I like the new style of lines you've used for busts, fits with RM2K3 RTP too!

PS You should change your profile pic to a pic of Fermat or Victor! :>

Thank you to you both!

Getting the style down for the busts was an interesting hour of fiddling. I'm not entirely a fan of how the black edges on the smaller ones ended up turning out, but I am happy that I was able to get them looking good at such a small size. :)

Thanks again!

PS @Soach : Changing my icon to Fermat or Victor is a thing that is happening today. no worries~! I must always be on top of my newest game in my icon. It's my personal fashion trend.

What a nice game you got there! Lovely characters with such a beautiful relationship =)

Now, i get it, combat isn't the focus of this game, but it's the only game mechanic and players spend most of the time in the battle system, so it has to be fun. It can be easy, but fun. There are lots of random fights, so by the middle of the game i was just watching them with 'autofight'. I can't run from them and they don't give me any rewards. You could remove all battles and just use puzzles, or use only 'boss fights' requiring a little more strategy.

The story was great, i loved the dialogues, but we don't see much of the character's relationship evolution; they got too close too fast, it would've been nice to see more scenes about this evolution, see more reasons for their approximation. Well, it was a nice small game to play, well done =D

answering your questions:

1. Which character's side of the story did you play?  Victor's
2. When did you realize the character you picked was actually not a hero, but a demon?

i started suspecting it as soon as they talk for the first time, but i guess i was sure only when he first got super angry for no reason.
3. When did you realize that the other character was also a demon?

If i remember correctly, in the boat scene when he tries to tell his secret.

@Musashi: Thanks for playing! I agree, cutting the combat out all together would have made more sense overall - unfortunately, by the time I had come to that decision, the story was already written in such a way that there were at least 4 scripted fights (counting the Tournament all as one) and I felt that tossing the player into a 'boss' battle right off the bat with all those skills was a bit of a drag. (though, perhaps the tournament fights lead into being enough of a padding on their own to prepare you for the Larry fight and the final two battles.)

The final two fights did involve a bit more strategy in my head. Sadly, the 2k3 reflect glitch bulldozed my strategy. After an entire night of troubleshooting to find that glitch, I basically tossed my arms in the air and said "Whatever!" and borked the final two fights too. (Though I didn't mean to bork the one as much as I did!!)

As for their relationship:

I excuse their very quick bonding with - They are two parts the same person. In a strong way, they already know each other and have a bond.
Not that I don't disagree that things were rushed! They very much were. Had I allotted myself more time, I would have liked to have added a couple more scenes to flesh things out a bit more. (maybe pad out that final slog with some rewarding cutscenes for your efforts as well)

Thank you for taking the time to play and leaving your thoughts :) I don't think I'll revisit this game too much more - considering it was just something small to fill time between bigger, better projects - but I'd like to revisit the characters again in the future, so I'll definitely keep those things in mind. And thanks for answering the questions! I'm curious to see if it's easier to figure out on one side of the story VS the other.

-----------

UPDATE:

I updated the download based on some feedback and watching a couple of let's plays. Changes made:

* fixed some mapping errors

* lowered some encounter rates in the final dungeon

* fiddled a bit with the second last battle so hopefully it's less broken now

* Fixed some pass-ability issues.

* Added just two more loot points

* Adjusted the volume level of the town music

And here's some artwork JUST BECAUSE!

Answering the questions you posted:

1. Which character's side of the story did you play?

Victor... Wow it feels like everyone's played as him.

I just chose him because the cursor was on him first and i couldnt decide.

2. When did you realize the character you picked was actually not a hero, but a demon?

"Fermat I'm taking you to the castle even if i have to drag you in pieces"

"What's wrong with my taste in flesh?"

These happened in two different scenes but yeah, put them together and you've got a non-human.

3. When did you realize that the other character was also a demon?

When they were in the hut and Fermat said something like "Yeahhh, no. We shouldnt go. Really."

I didnt know for sure if he was a demon, but i knew he had some kinda connections with the demon lord of doom.

I actually played through twice, first as Fermat second as Victor.  I did a speed run with Victor and beat the game in a little over 30 minutes.

I really enjoyed playing this game, both of the characters were so adorable! Really like their design.

Had some, minor, trouble with the fighting sequences, the windows acted a bit... weird? But it could be just me not used to it.

1. Which character's side of the story did you play? Fermat's, a social awkward necromancer? Count me in.

2. When did you realize the character you picked was actually not a hero, but a demon? I think it was in one of the "thoughts" screens, when it was just a black screen and white text? Sorry I can't be more specific.

3. When did you realize that the other character was also a demon? I had my suspicion right when Victor started to act all angry out of nowhere, and was quite certain when he made the "flesh comment". Though I thought he was gonna end up being the Overlord or something, not that they would both be it. Really liked the ending, so cute!

Thanks for answering the questions so far, everyone <3

@Mayuen: The battle system is entirely 2K3's default battle system. I noticed that too, the command window likes to stick around on the victory screen, or lock up during enemy attacks. The only thing in the combat that isn't default is the HP/MP Transfer spells (which are just a skills that flicks a switch and then the rest of the skill is evented) But yeah, the weird window thing is default behaviour. I'm not used to it either; it's just solidified in my mind that this will be the first and last time I try to make an RPG in 2K3. Too buggy for my tastes.

I'm glad you enjoyed the ending! <3 (also yay! more people picking Fermat first~)

What's the ending? The game went buggy and I didn't get to see it!!!!!! I demand dinner by the seeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaa! Dammit! Now I have to go do the seals again! sigh.

Other than that, loved it so far, both characters were adorably cute. I would actually love if you could make it into an even longer game. lol.

EDIT

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

Love this so very much!

Could you tell me what it did to go buggy? (though I have a guess, my guess involves spoilers, so yeah) I'd like to fix it if possible. Also, let me know if you want a save file with the seals broken. I know that part is a slog :(

I really, REALLY want to do more with these characters. Trust me, I'm not done with them. I can't leave them in the dust so easily. o3o I dunno what yet, but there were some outstanding enemies left lingering in the background I can use.

It went buggy at the second last fight. You know... *that one* the one that makes you want to scream because Nooooooooooooooooooooo! Just did seals and nearly at the end and just.... no....

But I watched Indrah's play through at the end and I feel better. Will replay as Fermat soon.

Ah okay. Same place it crashed for Indrah. I wish I knew what that crash actually meant. I think Rach and I are going to have to implement the one thing we thought might save it.

We can only figure it has more to do with Actor 1 not being in the party. So it's time to not remove Fermat from the party, but change Fermat into Victor ;D Since I've never experienced the random crash on Fermat's route.
