I listen to SO damn much game music, but if I had to pick a few standout favorites...

Final Fantasy music is usually good, no argument from me. IV, VI, VII, and VIII have the best OSTs overall, I'd say.

It's odd, but most of the rearranged FF stuff I don't care for that much. The exceptions are the concert renditions - the "Dear Friends" and "Distant Worlds" tours. The 2010 concert in Stockholm, Sweden, produced the absolute best renditions of some personal favorites, such as:

That one really struck me, because I've been wanting a full orchestra version of the Prelude for years and never got one until this!

And speaking of amazing things I hadn't heard before: Dancing Mad, with full orchestra... and choir! Until this iteration, most arrangements of this music omitted the voices entirely, but not this time! The first two minutes and the last two minutes of this are just astonishing. Especially the last two!

muramasa, I agree the Morrowind opening is great, but I have to go with "Dragonborn", the Skyrim variation. Blew me away the first time I heard the whole thing. Skyrim in general is the best Elder Scrolls OST yet, I think.

A lesser known great is Einhander. This game was made in 1998, and now fifteen years later, I still have not heard anything else quite like it. Techno, but moody and intense! Awesome stuff. The track linked below is one of the best boss themes I've ever heard:

And finally, lately I've been stuck on the absolutely masterful soundtrack to the PSP re-release of Tactics Ogre:

Saito S: That rendition of Dancing Mad... is absolutely stunning. It would be sheer gaming bliss to play a full 3D remake of FF6, with the final battle set to that arrangement in particular.

Wow, this is a topic that I could talk about for hours.  It's so difficult to just narrow it down to a few choices (since I'm sure nobody would read a wall of text from me.)  So many different styles of music, and feelings for them.  A soundtrack can make a moving scene into a truly memorable one.

Let's see, the first that comes to mind would be the Ys games.

Ys Chronicles - Ice Ridge of Noltia

Another personal favorite, would be from the Ace Combat series.  So many tracks from the series stand up on their own.  But for me, this one is fantastic, and I just can't get enough.  Everything about it.  <3

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War - ReprisalI'll leave the videos at that...  There is so much that can be posted.  @_@

@ Dark Messiah:  I love the remake of that Castlevania tune.  In fact, you just can't go wrong with Castlevania music, in general.

Original title theme from "The Legend of Zelda".  So timeless, and even the NES made it sound epic.  The various remixes and orchestrations over the years have only added to the legend (ooh punny).

I could literally LIVE on this thread...so many blasted memories...and perhaps the reason why I even got into music in the first place. Oh, video-game music...

Here's one I'm surprised wasn't posted yet. It's a hottie from the NES! =DDD

Tristram theme in Diablo all the way. I could also include Ocean Palace theme in Chrono Trigger or Solstice's title screen theme.

The instrumentation and flow of this song is damn near perfection.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
