I bought Ys Origin during the latest Steam Summer Sale and had a blast playing it (except when I was raging at the final boss and its stupid beam attack -which I thankfully eventually figured how to avoid but holy **** that beam-). I'll probably get Oath in Felghana at some point too. After playing through the prequel I need to have a taste of the main timeline.

DUDE I WANT THE OST TO CELCETA SO BAD.

It looks like they're getting pretty heavy into PC ports too, which will be a plus down the road.

Which difficulty was that brother? I'm playing it in Hard mode and still haven't finished it yet because I usually waste too much time grinding and figuring every boss' attack patterns lol.

Normal. I'm not the sort of masochist that plays games that involve any sort of reflexes on hard mode. I have barely just enough self-respect not to choose easy.

As I understand it, a lot of the Ys games were first released on PC then later ported to consoles. So it's not like they are on a PC porting craze, Xseed are releasing translated versions of the originals. Which is just as good.

A non indie Japanese developer making pc games. Crazy, I know. Too bad they seem to be veering into console exclusive territory lately.

I remember getting my premium edition Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles back at Gamestop. The cashier looked at me, with a "what the Frick is this kid buying."

This thread makes me want to play Chronicles and Seven again, unfortunately my PSP is dead through long use and hacking.

I think I burned a disc of Dawn of Ys somewhere in my house...

@Erilex: Totally understand where you're coming from, brother. It is indeed frustrating sometimes not to be able to defeat a boss despite trying a lot hahaha. And it's weird sometimes, no matter how hard and how many times I try patiently, I just can't defeat a boss. So I get frustrated and take a break from the game for like a week or two and come back thinking it'd be even harder as it's been a little while since the last time I tried, so it'd take a few tries for me to familiarize with the control system again. And then ridiculous miracle happens as I defeat the boss in one or two tries. And I totally have no idea why and how.

The thing is, at times like that I don't think the feeling of victory pays off very well since it only took very few tries to win, and I never even intended to actually beat the boss, unlike the last time when I tried very very hard but couldn't after all. It's just weird like that.

And yeah, Ys titles in the past (from the very first Ys to Ark of Napishtim to be exact) all started with PC first and then got ported to other platforms. I kind of don't quite get why Falcom has been trying to make exclusivity for the newest 2 titles.

@Jawnsunn: like Erilex said, there are Ys Oath in Felghana (which is about Adol's third adventure in terms of time), and Ys Origin (which is a prequel to the whole series, takes place hundreds of years before Ys I&II) available on Steam, and there's a discount for both of them at the moment if I'm not wrong. So, if you can, I recommend giving them a shot ;)

Guys, guess what? The OST album has just been released. Check it out here on iTunes!

Go and buy it please if you can. Because man, JDK is simply the best.

Or if you can't, then try the album here on Youtube.

I just replaced the youtube playlist link with a complete one. Give the album a hear, guys!

So far I think my favorite tracks are the Main Theme, Burning Sword, Gust/Blast of Wind and In the Scorching Flames/In the Fires of Ignition. Too bad the new Adol Theme isn't anything new but a remix of Adol Theme 1993.

I really hope there will be a Super Arrange Version of this album soon. My life will then be so complete ;_;

It's. just. so. good.

Wow...I definitely need to get a vita now. There were already a number of games I wanted, and this just adds a heap to that list lol

I'm really a fan of JDK. Their music is just simply awesome. Thanks for the link XD

And I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a super arrange version too. Already great songs remixed to sound even more awesome :D

If you have the choice, then start with either Ys Chronicles I&II or Ys Origin, whatever comes your way first ;)

Is the Ys series setting same in every game? Sort of like Suikoden? Or is it like Final Fantasy, completely different?

Not really. Basically in the main Ys series (excluding Ys Origin), Adol travels to a new continent/region in every title, meeting new people (sometimes old, but most of the time they don't matter much anymore). So I can say it's pretty safe if you don't follow the actual timeline ;)

Generally the timeline is like this:

  • Ys Origin - a sequel to the main Ys series. Takes place on the main Ys land and Darm Tower, a few hundreds years before Adol's first appearance. This one explains the reason behind the existence of the Darm Tower, and what happened to the Fact family back then. Available on Steam.
  • Ys I&II - the first title of the franchise. Adol's first adventure obviously.
  • Ys: Oath in Felghana - Available on Steam
  • Ys IV: Mask of the Sun ; Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys ; Ys: The Foliage Ocean in Celceta - those 3 basically are the same in terms of time, place, characters probably. The only real difference here (regardless of gameplay) is the plot. And only Foliage Ocean in Celceta is developed by Falcom. It's just been released for PS Vita.
  • Ys - The Ark of Napishtim: this one is on PC too. Although it's in Japanese, there has been a complete English fan-translation.
  • Ys Seven - the latest Adol adventure on the timeline. English version on PSP only. There's PC version but it's in Chinese :( Falcom has an entire branch in China.

Hope this helps :)

1 and 2 Complete/Chronicles is a good game man.

Running into things is so satisfying and the pixel art style is just so beautiful. Only 13 bucks is a steal, considering that the PSP version costs around 20-30 bucks or so.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
